Hi Bo.....I used 1 or 2 different brands years ago mate. The usage of the auto/wah is so minimum on the band stand, and only on single notes. Spend your money on something else like a good Leslie simulator (Line 6 Roto machine), where full chords can be used and on more occasions.....but with all effects use them sparingly

I think Garcia used one, and, if I recall correctly, he's using it on the first New Riders of the Purple Sage record (the song, "Dirty Business"?). He was probably using a Mutron. I've had a Q-Tron Plus that was very nice (but large), but never tried it on steel. The Cambell Brothers use wah-wah, but an auto-wah might get close to the blossoming attack of their tone with the wah.

I use the auto-wah setting in my PODxt every so
often. Comes in handy for those slow country
ballads!

I've faced some confusion on terminology in the past, further complicated by some fx makers mixing up the terms as well. Just to clarify, for anyone who cares----to the best of my understanding, a filter effect is triggered by the instrument and can be adjusted for sensitivity of the trigger as well as speed, depth, Q and other tonality aspects. An auto-wah is just sort of like having a robotic foot going up & down on a wah while you play, like an amp's tremolo (with speed & depth controls.) They each are cool, for sure. Depends on what you are shooting for.
I actually got a weird box by Akai, a Variwah a few years ago, surprisingly cheap and since then discontinued, that combines standard wah, auto-wah and filter in one unit. It's not excellent but it's not bad. Never used it on the stand but it's a fun toy at home.

BTW--any good dining recommendations in auto-wah on a Saturday night?

What Jon said...

I have a Boss Auto-Wah, which is just kind of a weridly-voiced trem pdal. The QTron is king of the triggered envelope filters, but as stated pretty large - I sold mine a couple years ago.

I do use one now - and it's funny, because I have this huge collection of boutique effects pedals (I'm an effects junkie - comes frommy 6-string days) and the best triggered-wah, or "envelope filter" I've found for steel is the cheapest one on the planet: a DOD FX25B. If you have to pay more than $50 for one you're in the wrong place.

It's very controllable, from a mild, almost light-flange sound to a Donald Duck "quack", and reacts variably depending on your attack. With light picking you hardly know it's on, and when you dig in, it quacks like crazy.

It's not something I use all the time, but it's fun to have - I lik to play a lot of old soul, stuff by the Meters, and other WAY non-country things, and it really gives me that Sly and the Family Stone upper-range guitar "chop" on steel.

Garcia did use an original Mutron III, very good units - I had one once, now they're "collectable" and reissued for big bucks. Even better I think are the triggered filter sweep things in a Digitech Genesis 3, there are actually three different ones, all with widely adjustable parameters. Try playing steel with a ping-pong ball and one of those! I also have a little stompbox Boss AW-2 that's so noisy as to be unusable, at least by me.

I use one quite often with our band, I use a Boss AW2 (I think thats the model number). I usually use it with a Tubeworks Tube driver for distortion. I'll post a link to a song I used it on when I can get my hosting site to work.

Maybe this will work: click here
They ask you to type in a security code, but then the file should download.

These are my favorite boxes. I have quite a collection of envelope filters.....I have even built a couple. My favorites in order:

Electro Harmonix Zipper(1970's not the tube zipper re-issue)
Musitronics MuTron III ( Original not reissue)
Mutron Micro V
Ibanez AF-9
Ibanez Af-201
MXR Envelope Filter
Q-Tron Reissue
Systec
Univox
Seamoon Funk Machine
Meatball
Frostwave FunkADuck
EH Y -Triggered Filter

here is link of me using EH Zipper on a tune called "Feed My Monkey" http://www.freshlybaked.com/audio/mp3/gravy/Gravy/Gravy_FeedMyMonkey.mp3
with my band Gravy http://dreadneck.net

The guys who did the built the first EH and Mutron...Mike Biegel and Elliot Randall(Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder)did the redesign for the qtron reissue.

I use the autowah in a Digitech RP50 for Dirty Business, it sounds very psychedelic and fits the song very well. JP

My fave is always the Mutron, but the Seasound Funk Machine was the choice of Larry Graham- the original monster of funk and the best sounding player to use one. The Electro Harmonix Micro Synth has a great envelope Follower, and the Q Tron is mighty as well.

I believe Larry had something to do with the design of the Seamoon out of Berkley, CA
during that whole 70's funk deal
tower of power, legion of mary, sly...etc

The micro synth envelope section based on the zipper of course
just google mike beigel
he's the man
as is elliot randall

If you can find one,the Electro-Harmonix "Doctor Q". I still use my MXR/E.F. on occasion.

WHY aren't there guys around here...at least that I can find...who want to do that kind of stuff? I'd gig for free to play music like that.

Rand, that was tremendous. Do you have any other stuff like that in the can? CD? The Zipper sounds great. I'm surprised at the simlarity I'm getting with my cheapo DOD - you guys might want to check them out, nowI'm convinced it really does sound good when I compare it to the Zipper.

BTW, fantastic photoraphy as well. Another hobby/passion that I've been neglecting on the"art" side and doing industrial magazine junk instead (yawn).

Rand - I found the mp3 link - A METERS SONG?

You're killing me. I HAVE to find some players here.

Anyone who wandered in here who is a mostly-country...or all country...player needs to at least give the Gravy stuff a listen. THAT'S the kind of thingI've been posting about for year as far as widening the horizons of steel.

I'm REALLY glad to have found that, Rand. Thanks. It makes believe there IS hope!

;-)

Thanks Guys
wait til you hear the next album
almost in the can
"Feed My Monkey" very bandish
the song "Heavy Load" is more Little featish

new album has some of that + some Burrito/Byrds sounding stuff mixed with Jerry Jeff/Merle Hagard sounding stuff

Jim....i used to live in hermosa and then venice. But I had to move out here to find "those guys"

Gravy may be making it out to LA in near future....my other band 33, plays the cinema bar and an occsional south bay spot

I'm actually playing it on my C6 neck
I have a 2 pedal combo that puts middle 6 strings into G dobro tuning

Let me know when you're in town if you think about it...I'll try to catch the show.

I used to have "those guys" around here, but most moved to Palmdale/Lanscaster for some reason!

Hey,if its good enough for "E",its good enough for me. Speaking of the "live" album, our local college Jazz station (WMOT-FM) played a cut from "E"s album the other day. (we're makin' headway.)

I like the HAZ Industries Mutron III,i.e the reissue one. I was using it with my '69 PP into a Bruno Cow tipper last night with this R&B band that I am playing with. Sounded pretty killer! Cut through in a band with three guitarists, keys, bass and drums. I have noticed it seems to work best if I put it last in the chain, i.e. after any distortion effects but before reverb. Although envelope filtering on a reverb signal could be cool. Have to try that sometime.

I've been using a pedal I discovered earlier this summer, the Emma Discumbobulator: http://www.emmaelectronic.com/v2/index.php?sid=29&cid=11&1161019408

Of the pedals currently in production, this one sounds closest to the MuTron III to me.
It's also true bypass, and uses the same power supply as Boss pedals (I use a Daisy Chain from a TU-2 to power pedals).
It sounds really good on steel. I bought another one so I can have one for guit and one for steel (I have seen them as low as $169 brand new).

I have a HAZ MuTron III+ for sale if anyone is interested (shoot me an email).
