Just begining to play and looking for smoother tones this 78lb behemoth without some kind of place to start would make a fine mooring anchor, I have the owners manual which tells me how great it is but not how to set it, can somebody help ?

The last time I used an amp was 20 yrs ago and they called volume volume and tone meant tone, This one has 3 channels and 13 knobs on it,What do they call the tone control on it?

Bill, it is a two channel amp. If you plug into the first input jack far left it will be hotter than the second jack so you might set the amp like Buddy suggests then try both inputs to see which works best for you. The setting are shift and mid both straight up 12:00, bass at 3:00, treble at 10:00 and presence at 2:00. These are positions as the hour hand on a clock. Set volume to what is needed. This will get you in the ballpark. The most useful controls are the shift and mid which work together. You might try backing the mid counterclockwise and the shift clockwise a little to dial in what you want. The bass and treble controls are obvious what they do but the mid and shift are the less obvious and yet very important in the Peavey design.

Ok, Ok, so im not that Bright ! I didnt know low and high meant treble and base, it works now, thanks......and I didnt get to hearwhat it sounds like richard which I wish I could.
Now I got one more puzzle. Theres a thingie in the back, a long flat metal box lying in the bottom loose with 2 wires going to it and it says "Accutronics" on it.has something to do with the reverb. What is it? why is it lying loose...also this is a BW equipped amp, is that all so different? it does sound better now in the bottom jack, I have this creature in a basement room about 12'X 20', not the auditorium.. Scary !

Also be aware that HIGH, LOW, and PRESENCE contols are "zeroed" at the 12:00 o'clock position.

So turning clockwise increases that dimension and counterclockwise diminishes it. Counterclockwise actually takes it away.

Thanks everybody, I think I got the settings where I can handle em, I think im just over powered here abit, I can only turn the gain to the first mark and It seems like a hot bike, It aint gonna run good if ya cant crack the throttle abit. The old folks upstairs left for abit and I went for nr 2 on Gain and it was much better even tho I likely ruined the upstairs dog..Now all I gotta know is about that reverb thing lying loose in the bottom,If it should be mounted somewhere.... seems to make static left there, if I take it out and lay it on the floor its ok but thats not the way they make things, how is it possa be ? Whatever it is it works fantastic !

The Accutronics is your reverb tank and it should be in plastic/canvas or whatever bag and screwed to the bottom of the cab, not just laying loose on the bottom.

As Michael said, the tank should not just be laying in the bottom but if you are just using the amp at home and not moving it around you might put some foam rubber under it maybe 1/2 inch thick or so to somewhat isolate it from the vibration of the amp cabinet. If you will be carrying the amp out you could get a piece of vinyl, wrap it around the tank, lay it back in the bottom of the amp and put a small screw in each of the vinyl. Originally, the amp came with the tank slid into a tolex "pouch" about 3" longer than the tank and was fixed into position with a screw in each end.

Anybody still out there on this thread ?
This reverb stinks and so im going to have to buy a digital but first im wondering if Peavey hasnt made a respectable reverb we can just "Plug n Play" into the existing RCA jacks on all our amps, I know it wont sell lots of new amps but it surely would make a lot of happy steelers..

Hi Bill, First of all, get you a BOSS RV-3,or a RV-5 for your digital reverb. Here's the settings I use on theVegas 400 ,
Low + 15
Paramid "800"-2:00 O-Clock position
Shift "150"-7:00 O-Clock position
High+6
Presence+3

Thanks Kenny,
Phred told me about the RV5 too..
Just seems a shame to have those tank wires there and we gotta plug in yet two more thingy, I mean if they even made one to go internal, I would rather spend the money on that, I'll try your amp setting too but I think the reason im not getting what I want is the reverb.or lack of !
Not car mfgr's I guess......No factory Recall for bad reverb..

I like to run the "Low" at +15 for that smooth "Nashville Sound".

Yashure Kenny,
Now Ive created a monster...I added an RV 5 just now to the new already hot Zum pickup and that PV400 and this poor baby plywood MSA dont know what its supposed to do. What a beast.
Maybe the upstairs folk will go somewhere and give me a chance to experiment(and break some windows),I cant turn it up enough to stop the strings from fizzling but the cat loves it heee-hee...

I didnt get to hear Richards picking, wish I could but anything on Youtube or myspace or anything like that is too hard to download on dialup so I cant even listen to Chris Le Drew, RATZ !

If I have to keep it low sumat.in order to maintain order anyways, does it make any sense to turn on both pre gain and post gain at the bottom #2 or lower instead of using one on maybe 4 to get farther up in that pot and farther from the fizzle point of 0 ?
I think part of the tone problem is not being able to crank the volume abit, would it make more sense to put it all on one pot ?

Or to say it better, should the volume if its that low be all post EQ ?

I prefer to have the Post knob higher than the Pre, but that could just be a habit from years ago, when amps could be made to distort by winding the Pre flat out, with only a small amount of Post.
To play at a quiet level, try plugging into the bottom input jack, put Pre on 1 and Post on 2.
Alternatively, disable the Vegas speaker by plugging a dummy jack into the 'Power Amp In' socket (on the back of the amp),take a line out (also from the back of the amp), and plug into a Hi-Fi system, and control the volume from there.
