This is an old EV 15" speaker that was given to me. It need reconed. It weighs more than my amp, likely 75 lbs. plus. That big magnet on there is as big as it looks; the guy I got it from said it came from an old Victrola cabinet. Anyone know anything about it? I just thought it was kind of cool, might even be interesting on a historical level- I have seen a lot of speakers over the year but I have no idea what this is, other than a 15 with a serious weight problem. Any ideas? |

Dear KeithThat 15 is from the SRO - or Pre SRO time of Electro-Voice Production at that time they were offering Lifetime Warranty - transferable to current owner. If you contact Ev in Buchannan and talk to the service department with the Serial Number you may very well get a Free Recone , although it might be cost off set by the shipping fees. Any Certified Reconer in the Atlanta area can drop a current SRO Lead (Guitar not Bass) cone right in there and it will rock on. The Deal with the extra heavy magnet structure is Since those days the magnets were replace by lighter weight units , as this was intended to live some where and not go on the road. The invent of Rock n Roll tours etc , caused EV and others to Re design their componants to accomidate logistics. I am a factory trained and Certified reconer with EV - JBL- and numerous other brands. DR. Boards |

That's a classic keith...i bet in it's time the bass that thing could produce would knock you over...i bet it would still hold up to some newer ones. Those EV speakers are hard to beat. |

It seems pretty unbelievable. I will check into the reconing thing with EV, if all else fails I will have it around for studio use. Won't want to tote it to jam sessions, for sure. |

Keith Those EV's were typically 2.5 inch voice coils , and much like JBL the magnet Voice Coil Gap will fit both their Bass Paper and their Lead Paper. The Lead Paper is thinner and has those Ripple Lines ... the Bass Paper is more dense and no ripple lines. the other difference is the voice coil has more turns on the bass one, any new replacement coil typically has a modern former made of Kapton , also there are several thicknesses of Spider .. the rippled part under the cone that attaches to the coil, the bass ones use the heavier spiders too, basically this tightens up the travel and makes it more thuddy sounding , the lead cone and it's lighter spider is much faster resulting in a better cone for Steel or other lead instruments , the same basic comparison in jbl terms is d-140 = bass d-130 = lead same thing ... thick light faster , the ligher faster ones go up to full volume with less power , the down side is they will blow quicker when over powered. in any case you have a great vintage frame there , enjoy. Thanks, George! Now I have to decide if I am going to keep it or turn it into the $$ for my Sierra lap steel that I am trying to get the $$ for. Either way it is a cool item to find! |
