I downloaded Limewire for music downloads and my computer seems to be sluggish since doing so last evening. Can anyone comment? Is this normal? Maybe I should deinstall the software? Many thanks.Roy ------------------ http://www.clictab.com/RoyT/Roy_Thomson_Steel_Courses.htm |

And if you don't get a virus you'll at least get a truckload of spyware installed on your computer. I just cleaned up the PC for a friend who had been using Limewire for a while,- a complete Counter Spy scan found well over 100 infected files..... Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com

There is no spyware with Limewire. You will probably have to upgrade your Java though. Makes a huge difference. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp |

Limewire itself isn't a problem, but any peer-to-peer program is a haven for virus and trojan-laden files. You have to be REAL careful about weird file sizes and such (as noted, very small ones and almost all .exe...plus .zip) - those are the ones that are almost always loaded with viruses and/or spyware.Safer with a Mac, really. But still you have to be careful. It's just not worth downloading music files illegally that way, and programs are nearly always boobytrapped. Limewire, Kazaa, Morpheus, et al - risky stuff to use. |

Roy; Run a virus and spyware scan ASAP! Where does youtube fit into this? Does one risk the same sort of exposure by viewing videos there? I had my Outlook Express go south yesterday--it wouldn't connect to the server and it kept crashing. Reboot didn't help. I did a system restore to 24 hours earlier and all's ok. AV & malware searches were negative. No idea if my youtube viewings are in the least bit related but it spooked me. (I'm using Firefox, btw, but not Thunderbird--had installation problems with it and walked away.)[This message was edited by Jon Light on 04 March 2006 at 07:32 AM.] |

I would second Jon Light's question about YouTube and virus/spyware/malware exposure. |

I am late getting back to this thread and was not aware of additional input. After deinstalling Limewire I did a system check and all was clean. I then took out my 40 GB Hard Drive and installed a 120GB as part of a current upgrade which was planned anyway. I will not be downloading any other File Sharing Programs until risks are minimized.------------------ http://www.clictab.com/RoyT/Roy_Thomson_Steel_Courses.htm |

Roy, The problem is not with Limewire (although it does need up to date Java for faster speed). This situation is no different than with any file you bring into your computer from any source. I am not aware of any MP3 virus problems. Perhaps someone else knows otherwise. If you have up to date anti-virus, any problem is pretty much eliminated right there. In my experience, websites are more likely to give you spyware than anywhere else. |
