It is so tragic and sad when someone, a friend, is taken away from us. We always wish we could have them back , even for a moment. God bless you Dean Rick Tyson |

I'd just like to add my tribute to the many. I only knew Dean from his emails, but it's not hard to recognise one of the good guys. Deepest sympathy to all his family.

I played in a band with Dean in New York City in the mid-late 80's and had just sent him a tape of some recent efforts of mine and had received a tape of him playing in a band called the Howlers, which sounded really good and it was a pleasure hearing again some of Dean's signature licks plus a lot of new ones. For those in this forum who didn't know him personally, I'd like to say that Dean was a true professional, the kind of guy you hope to work with but too often don't get to. His playing was always better than he thought it was, but he didn't waste time and effort beating himself up either. He was just a great musician, period, not just on the steel, his main axe, but he was a wonderful vocalist and highly accomplished guitarist too. And as a person, he lit up the room with his wit -- always had a funny when one was needed -- knew how to open a vent for a session that was under pressure -- knew how to offer and take criticism -- in other words, he knew how to work, or as I said before, he was a real pro, make no mistake. God knows we can't spare ANY pedal steel players, but we sure got ripped off this time. My heart goes out to Dean's wife Susan and the whole family, especially the little step-grandson Calvin ("Calvinator" to Dean) who Dean obviously adored. There's so much more I could say about Dean, but I get the feeling it's pretty well known anyway among his friends and colleagues what a great, special guy he was, and how much he'll be missed.

I would like to also express my condolences to Dean's family. I'm very sorry for your troubles. Unlike alot of internet groups, this bunch seems to be a family, and although I never had the pleasure of meeting Dean, I've thought of his family a hundred times this week. Peace, -John |

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Deans family. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Dean but from all of your posts I feel I now do.I will be attending a memorial in Seattle this Sat the 12th for I lost my Niece in that accident. There will be pictures of the people we lost and I will feel a definate tie with now two of them. The steeling community is a close one and this thread has helped me to deal with the loss.I will say a prayer for Dean and his family when I am there and thanks to everyone. Dave Burton Imagine the jam session they are having in heaven. |

I never knew, met, spoke to or emailed the man yet I find myself constantly thinking about him. All I can say to the Family is "I'm deeply sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers". I also play in his honor. BobG (brother steelman).

I am also sadenned at this news. Not to seem frivolous, but does anyone know if Dean's pictured Zumsteel was on the plane with him? I have an image in my mind of an NTSB investigator trying to figure out what part of the plane the changer mechanism came from... R.I.P Dean You were indeed Zumbody special |

I, too, have never had the opportunity to meet Dean in person. I only knew him through his posts on this forum. Forum members here are like a big family, and it is especially saddening to hear of a loss of a fellow steeler and forum member. My prayers go out to Dean's family and others that were close to him.R.I.P. Dean, God Bless the Forshee family. |

I think Dean's passing touched us all here in a number of ways. First, he was a friend, or acquaintance, or at the very least a fellow forumite, with whom we all shared a common love of the PSG. So we lost one of "our own," and that's always a poignant thing. Secondly, he was involved in an airplane crash. I'd guess we all fear that calamity to one degree or another, for ourselves and for others, especially since we're so helpless to do anything about it (in a car one at least has the feeling - whether or not it's really true - that one can control something about a potential crash). And now we know someone who actually went through the worst of the worst. (Sigh....) And thirdly, Dean, at 47, was about the average age of all of us steelers. So perhaps his passing has made us think a bit more about our own mortality, which as classic middle-agers we've probably been thinking about more and more just because of the phase of life we're in. Sorry to seem so somber, I don't really mean to be. It just really gives you a lot to think about.[This message was edited by Bill Llewellyn on 10 February 2000 at 12:11 PM.] |

Bill, you are pretty much on track. As you know, I lost my oldest sister last month and that really started me pondering my own death. Now, Dean...Well it's tough. I know I will snap out of it.------------------ Carter D10 8p/10k www.sinkler.com |
