I am very sad to learn this news. My prayers go out to Harold's family. I got to play one of his guitars at St Louis about 6 or 7 years ago in the Flynn display room for about an hour. Harold built a really great steel guitar. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Jerry

Our condolences go to his family and to you Fred as you and Harold were like a team. Our thanks to you for standing by him through it all. He will be sadly missed at the steel guitar shows, but his presence will always be there in everyone's minds and hearts. He sure left his mark down here and now he's making one in a better place. Glad to say we were among his many friends, Leslie and Ron Elliott |

Harold lies in state at the Myatt Funeral Home, 2829 Rennoc Rd, in north Knoxville. His family will receive friends there from 7 to 9 PM Sunday evening. His personal guitar, the Blue Flynn that he played on so many shows, will sit silently in the sanctuary, bar and picks at rest. Gospel steel guitar tapes will be played softly over the sound system as friends gather. Toward the end of that evening family and friends will celebrate his life by sharing tributes and memories of him.At 11 AM on Monday there will be a graveside service at nearby Lynnhurst Cemetery, led by his step-son, Rev. Dan Baird, and myself. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Ronald McDonald House, an overnight facility for families with children in nearby hospitals. The architectural firm that Harold worked for designed the renovation of a large home for that purpose and Harold managed the project to its completion. He was always gratified by his association with the Ronald McDonald House and served on their board for twelve years. Contributions can be mailed in his honor to their business address at 1705 Clinch Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916. |

I am so sorry to hear of harold's demise. I don't think I ever met a finer person. One of the best memories I will Cherish was the interview Harold granted me in 1994, which was published in the Steel Guitar World Magazine. Harold shared his musical history and the love and care spent with his guitars. He also told me a little secret about his cabinets which I've never shared with anyone. Fred, you may know of which I speak. I have missed his gentle presence the last few years but we all know that he is at complete rest, and in no way would want to come back. REST IN PEACE, MY FRIEND! I want to introduce myself as Harold Flynns Son. Even though we do not share the same last name, I consider myself his son. He came into my life almost 25 years ago when he married my Mom. He did not force his way into our lives, force his opinions or lifestyle, he didn't even force us to like the steel guitar. What he did however was to give of himself. He did allow us the opportunity to see him, warts and all, for what and who he was; a MAN of integrity and character. I know I may be preaching to the choir because many of you knew Harold the same way I did. I want to publically thank those of you that have written kind words and concern for our family. That was another aspect about Mr. Flynn that everyone that engaged in a conversation with him quickly learned; his love of family. He loved to get together with his brothers and sister, loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and last but certainly not least his steel guitar family. In a way we were sort of envious of you guys when he would go to St. Louis, Kentucky, Fla., because he was away from us; but he always came HOME to us with stories to tell. Even know that feeling of envy has begun to rear it's head again because he's not here, those feelings of envy are dispelled because I know where he is! He will live on now forever in heaven; but most of all in our memories! I leave you with this word that we would exchange to each other when leaving. It's not original, we stole it from Earnest Tubb; "Be good to your neighbors, and you"ll have better neighbors." Be good to your neighbors Harold! Thanks be to God for the person we knew as J. Harold Flynn!!![This message was edited by Dan Baird on 22 January 2001 at 05:13 AM.] [This message was edited by Dan Baird on 22 January 2001 at 05:14 AM.] |

The visitation went very well last evening. The family gathered at 5:30 PM and Gary McVay, who plays a Flynn pedal steel on the Smoky Jubilee show in Pigeon Forge, played 30 minutes of gospel songs, followed by shared memories and tributes to Harold from family and friends. A graveside service will occur at 11AM this morning.Beginning at 7PM, around 500 people filed through the sanctuary to express condolences to family, as tapes of steel gospel music by Ron Elliot, Jeff Newman, Herby Wallace and Leonard Zinn played softly over the sound system. Many of the visitors were musician friends who had played in bands with him over the years. Harold was well know in Knoxville. He oversaw the building of the Worlds Fair site there in 1982, as well as the TVA Twin Towers office building in downtown Knoxville. During his career, he was project manager for numerous multi-million dollar building projects from Cleveland, Ohio to Florida. He will be missed by his many friends and associates. |

Leonard T Zinn has been following your posts on Harold Flynn as both he and his wife Lynn were/are great friends of L. T.s When Leonard noticed that you used some of his music at the viewing of Harold he was very humbled and very happy that he could be there in that way. He wants me to convey his heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family and let them know he was proud and honored, that they chose his music. Regards, Evelyn and Leonard T Zinn |
