I just got off the phone and got the news that Claude just passed away a few minutes ago. This is truly another great loss to the Steel Guitar players and fans. To bad he never got the recognition he really deserved. HE WAS AN ENTERTAINER and his unique guitar and tuning was something else. I have no details at this point but will keep everyone posted. This really is a terrible loss ... not only for his great musicianship but also for his great humanity. Claude was in a Round Robin tape club instituted by George Lake and he displayed a wonderful sense of humour and great sincerity. He was what you'd call a real "character" ... a lovely guy.

This is indeed sad news. Claude was a very unique player with his "extra long" scale steel guitar, and also a great entertainer. RIP Claude, I will miss you. Jody.

I am very saddened by that news Ed but thank you for the advice.
Claude and I had emailed a few times before he got sick and he had promised to send me a tape of his Eharp playing which I was after having the works of several others on this tuning.
It must have been just before he went in the hospital that I got a tape from him with clips of his wonderfull playing. He introduces the tape and ends it with his voice and a message to me expressing thanks for my interest in his music.
We never met but I am so glad that our lives did connect in this small way.

Roy

This is truly sad news for Linda and I. What a jolly person Claude was. He was a TRUE entertainer and gentleman.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity of being Claude's friend and to play several steel guitar shows along side Claude.

He had a style ALL HIS OWN and it will never be duplicated.

What can I say ? Claude and I never met, yet we were good buddys. As Graham pointed out, he is, (was), a member of a Round Robin tape (club) in which his contributions were nothing short of spectacular to the point of awe. His playing style was so smooth. It was difficult to believe he was actually playing a regular 10 string steel guitar (E-Harp), and not a pedal guitar. I am so saddened by his passing in the realization we will never hear his humor or fine music again. My deepest sympathy goes out to Claude's family and closest friends...we've truly lost one-of-a kind. A sad day for the steel guitar world.

Claude very kindly sent me a tape of his playing a few years ago. He sounded loose and swinging - something I've never heard from anyone else who played the E-Harp tuning. Sad news.

Although we were only acquainted for about
six years I considered Claude to be a friend
We had jammed together in his motel room
during the convention in Joliet where we first met.

A great entertainer with whom I felt privileged to have had association.

He will surely be greatly missed by all.

I met Claude at the Atlanta Steel Guitar Extravaganza a few years ago, and got to hang out with him for a while. Since then, we kept in touch via email.

Claude was a wonderful person and a great entertainer, in addition to being a master of the E-Harp non-pedal tuning. I was happy to have him as a friend, and sad to see him leave us so suddenly.

Rest in peace, Claude. Our loss is Heaven's gain. God bless.
