You can anticipate and try to prepare for these things but in the end it is always a terrible shock. I did get to write him a letter years ago with no reply expected or received. At least he had a moment to remember who I was. I still have all the information he taught me somewhere upstairs and as long as I can recall it, he will be alive to me.I told him one time that I had heard his version of "Coconut Grove" on WSM and decades before Ray Price got to use the line; Bob said: "It's about time !!" "Danny Boy"; he once said; was one of his favorites as well as "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen." But when ye come and all the leaves are falling and I am gone as dead I may well be Ye'll come and find the spot where I am lying and kneel and say an Ave over me.... Godspeed and Goodbye, Bob !! Saddest Regards; Paul |

Sorry I never got to meet Bob. I'll have the honor of meeting Pee Wee and hearing his fantastic playing in Gulfport on December 6. (I can still hear those twin steels in my mind.) |

How brief the time it's been since the after-hours gatherings of musicians at Bob's "Someplace Else Supper Club" in downtown Oklahoma City back in the 1960's. Goodby Bob, you left some big tracks! Gene Jones |

BOB WHITE'S FUNERAL. Visitation will be this Sunday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith. Memorial service will be held on Monday at 11:00 am. His daughter "Snow" is making all the arrangements and can be contacted at (479) 784-9708.Bob spent the last few years of his life waiting on a heart transplant and there came a time that he had so much other problems he could not accept a heart if one became avaiable. Pee Wee once told me that Bob couln't walk 10 steps without stopping to catch his breath. Bob would fly into St. Louis to take tests at Barnes Hospital and we would always get together for lunch and talk steel guitar. Another Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame member gone and will be sadly missed by all of friends and fan alike. DeWitt Scott |

I attended the funeral and sat behind Ben Jack and his wife, Terry Anderson and his wife. Tony Ramsey and his wife were seated across the isle. There were many musicians in attendance including Gene Gasoway. A huge great picture of I think the Texas Playboys was up front. It featured Bob and PeeWee Whitewing on those "stand-up" twin Bigsbys. I told Ben there will never be music like that again. It was an emotional service with very emotional talks by Bob's Grandchildren and other family members. He and Ben Jack have been my local inspiration since the mid' 50's when I started playing. If those guys were playing in a club I would sit in the alley and listen to them thru the wall. Jerry. |

I believe the only Band Bob White and PeeWee Whitewing played stand up steels with was Hank Thompson and his Brazos Valley Boys. A great soud for sure Al |

Al, Ben Jack and I were discussing the picture and how great that music was, there was one or more horns, fiddles, I don't know what all. Ben told me who the band was but I just didn't remember. I think you are probably right though. The picture sure looked like Bob and PeeWee were having a lot of fun. And I can only imagine how great that must have sounded. I am sure we won't be hearing anything like that again. [This message was edited by Jerry Roller on 24 November 2003 at 05:38 PM.] |

Bob White was one of the greatest of steel guitar players ever! I have been off of the internet/forum for a few days, and just now reading this post. Speedy West, one of my mentors and a dear friend, and now another of our heroes is gone. Bob's "Steel Guitar Trek," L.P.s was one of the best steel guitar albums/tapes of all times. Terry Wood |

Bob's "Steel Trek" album had two releases-- the first by Scotty and the second by Longhorn Records. I was really taken back when I received a phone call from Bob in 1984 asking me to write the liner notes for the second release. It was quite an honor to do so. Two years before I was passing through Ft. Smith, AR and spent an afternoon and evening with Bob, just chatting. One of the things I said on the liner notes was that he was always full of surprises. You KNOW the song he was playing, and yopu'd anticipate where he would go with a certain line-- and then he'd never go there. He just sat at the steel and smiled. It was so effortless. He was also a real pioneer on the intrument-- having 10 string before many others, and having a double 12 MSA as his most recent guitar. I'll miss seeing him at St. Louis. He was a great player and a real gentleman.JW |

Bob White really was one of my all time favorites too! One of the guys that first made me realize that not all C&W had to be cornball. Does anybody know if he ever played a D12 Dekley? |

I received just today via email: quote: I just wanted to let you know how much Bob (Robert Wloyd) White, steel guitar legend and my hero meant to me. My name is marcy yoakum. I met Bob at his club The Cross Roads when I was only 10 years old. He took me under his wing and over the years has been such an inspiration to me. I am a singer songwriter and you have no idea how much he was there for me all through my life as a guider and friend. I drove to Texas from Las Vegas late Aug 2003 to record a song I had just written I called Bob to ask him to please play on the track for me. I had been away for a year or so from Ark my home state. I had no idea that he had had a stroke. His son brought him to Texas. Bob and I enjoyed a wonderful few days talking about the past. And although I could tell he was tired, he much to my amazement spent several hours to painstakingly lay down some of the most beautiful steel licks for my song. I hope and pray he knows how much it means to me. I video taped what I believe was his last recording session. I kissed him goodbye told him I would always love him. I went home with my treasure my song and my memories of a man who was my #1 influence. MY chosen DAD. Bob WHITE!! Later that year my christmas card came back along with my letter that told him how I intended to make a video of the song and use our studio clips as a tribute to him. Months later I found out he passed away only a few short months later. I knew in my heart, the first time I called and got a disconnected message. Today on this site I see it is official. I sit here with tears streaming down my face cause I will miss him so. Fortunately I have my pictures my songs, my memories of times shared with the great BOB White. If you will please e-mail me I would like to keep in touch with anyone else who knew him. Some day I hope to still release the song with Bob's last session in it!! sincerely Marcy Yoakum
A very touching letter. Bob's friends can email Marcy at deannamdorsey@earthlink.net .------------------

It is hard to believe that almost a year has passed since he left us. I wrote him a letter years ago not expecting a reply and was satisfied when none came as he had already done much for me. It also seems sad to me that now, some of the memories are leaving me. He was always such a big part of my world and that is fading with time. It is good to see others miss him as much as I do.Regards, Paul |
