Winnie and I have traded several emails in the past few months pertaining to his illness, his beliefs and his demise. Winnie had things thought out and planned. The world lost a musical genius and a good man today. |

Winnie was an absolutely brilliant man. I had the great pleasure of becoming friends with him, and talking via email, about the stae of bluegrass music, Robert Randolph, that infernal Brut bottle...You name it. Winnie was a great musician, artist, designer, mechanic---shoot, a great thinker. Never ONCE did he come on the Forum seeking sympathy, hollering,"woe is me," or asking ANYTHING of anybody. Great sense of humor, too. In one email to him, early on, I mentioned that he probably didn't know who I was. His reply,"Sure I know who you are! I've got cancer, not Alzheimer's!" That's Julian Winston. How brave to forego the indignity of treatment, when treatment of prostate cancer can often be worse than the disease itself. Just kept on working on his projects, as long as he was able. What a guy. Julian Winston taught a bunch of us how to play with feeling, how to live with a terrible disease with class, and ultimately, how to die with dignity. May he rest in peace. Thanks for this final lesson, my friend. |

I had the good fortune to spend some time with Winnie and his wife last year and at previous Brisbane Steel Guitar Conventions. He was always great fun to be around, with his stories and great sense of humour. He lived and died on his own terms and it was a pleasure to have known him. RIP Winnie...IP------------------

I am glad to be able to say ..that I told Winnie to his face..that his book saved me from the despair of having to give up on the pedal steel...and that it gave me over twenty years as Steel player and band leader of a pretty successful band. I am also glad to say that I spent some time with Winnie...and that we emailed each other. Feb this year Winnie was in Aus for the convention.....he was in a lot of pain and had to spend a lot of the time in his motel sleeping or resting.........but he did his bit on the show......and never once mentioned his pain or suffering when people stopped by to say hello....I know because I sat for a while talking to him....all he asked was that I write up the show on the forum.....he thought a lot of this forum for its exchange of ideas...its humour...everything else. So I wont be sad Winnie...just be glad to say you were my friend...and that your suffering is over......but I will miss you Tony |

Oh my, I considered Winnie a friend through many email series we shared over the last few years. I was fortunate to finally meet him in person at the last ISGC.What a GREAT character! As I saw above, his physical presence is in another place now, but his resonance will continue as long as there are steels being played. Not to mention his writing on holistic subjects. To say he will be missed is just too small a statment. Winnie, I hope you've arrived where you wished you would go at this time my friend![This message was edited by David L. Befitting one who was a published author, Winnie loved the English language and was a gifted practitioner. He had the uncommon ability to take a complex concept and translate it into simple words a lay person could understand. His classic book demonstrates his success. His technical drawings were of equal quality and I often marveled at their clarity and beauty. He will be missed, but his many contributions to the steel guitar world will act as a tremendous legacy. |

What sad day indeed. Winnie was good friend. His love for music was really someting. He played so good at the '04 International Steel Guitar Convention, even though he wasn't feeling well at all. His love for the steel guitar, music and people got him thorough his set. He was a fun guy to be around and I will miss very much. God bless Winnie. Bobby |

Like many others on this forum, I learned from that little soft cover book, with the little square 45 record in it.. It started me on a musical journey thats lasted the better part of 30 years . That book taught me the skills that I needed to play with authority, with a small degree of skill, and because of this I was fortunate enough to be able to actually make money playing the steel guitar. Taught by a man I never met, but felt like I knew, if that makes any sense. That book is long gone now, but the lessons within are part of my life experience.. thank you for teaching me mr. Winston... Rest in peace... bob |

WOW! What a shock. I never met Winnie but bought his book with the little vinyl record when it first came out (around 1975 I think). I keep it here beside me always. It is still in mint condition and the record has never been played. I am sure glad I kept this book. It has meant so much to me and many others. He will definitely be missed. May you rest now, Winnie. Gere |

I am deeply saddened at Winnie's passing. Some years ago, Winnie got in touch with me and said that he would soon be passing through London. He asked if anyone would like a seminar. It was quite short notice, but my good friend Roger (Rettig) found us a venue; I sent out a quick mailshot to inform players in the locality and many showed up to meet the legendary Winnie Winston. As usual, Winnie was his personable and humorous self and entertained us all evening. Winnie, we'll all miss you. Gerry |
