Tommy Hannum now plays with Ricky Van Shelton
and was my inspiration for playing steel and singing harmonies. Its not easy and not always possible without detracting from steel playing.

The band I play with in So. Virginia is called the Legends and our lead singer is also our steel guitarist. His name is Larry Sutphin and he's one heck of a singer as well as steelman. Larry used to be with gospel group which traveled down the east coast about 25 years ago or so and is equally adept at harmony part. He uses a Harmonizer machine and has the fool pedal velcro-ed to a plate on the leg of his steel so he just taps the thing with his right leg and he sounds like the Gatlin Brothers.
When I was back in Southern California I used to have a friend named James O'Rafferty who was a great steel player and vocalist. Some bandleaders wouldn't hire him as a steel player because he sang better than the vast majority of the. Just ask ol' Boomer, he knew J.G. very well.

Been doing it for years but found it works best wearing a face mike. Eaiser to look down and see where that bar is and what those little fingers are doing. Course you have to watch what you say. Face mikes give it all away.
