You could go to the opry and boo the rockers off the stage or everyone write the Opry in protest like we did Gaylord. Rusty what would you do hit them with the bars and scratch their eyes out with the picks.

I agree with Jeff inasmuch as we know we have
freedom of speech, but we also know we can't
stand up in a movie house and yell fire !!
We have to modify our thinking with a little common sense !! What I dislike most of the Opry TV portion is all the backstage talking. This must be regarded as a compliment for the
musicians as I seem to want to hear the music more !!
I think we shoulde all respect e4ach other's opinion, but be careful and only say what we
would say in person.
Now --- What I liked most about this thread
was CARL DIXON'S SMILEY FACE !!!

"...and I might have been takin'a

something that will get on the
recording...." Jeff P
It's the difference in playing for a living, or playing in your spare time. Lately, I have done some sessions on a per song basis.
The producer says "Play around with this one and we will see if we want steel on it." Some of them ain't real country! What do I do? I go from one extreme to the other, within my limited realm of course, trying to get on the cut. Most of you guys probably wouldn't like it. But it doesn't matter.

Reggie makes a great point -- "it doesn't matter."

In other words, no matter who you are, no matter what you play, no matter what kind of equipment you have, there will always be someone who'll swear on a stack of bibles that you sound just like a cat who's had it's tail caught in the fan belt!

So what's all the fuss about, anyway?

Problem is...a lotta people consider the Opry to have some historic value. And then again, some other people think that money, and popularity, and "current trends" should rule.

Along the same lines, maybe we should throw out all that old junk in the Smithsonian. And while we're at it, let's put some nice vinyl siding on George Washington's old place (Monticello)...you know..."spif it up" a little. Yeah, and let's buy up all the old classic Packards and Pierce-Arrows and put some modern fuel-injected engines in 'em. And them baseballs...surely we could come up with some kinda plastic that's better and cheaper that that old stitched up leather thing.

Each year, we have fewer and fewer "traditions" left in this country that I just thought that the Opry might remain a "small island of refuge in a sea of change".

Guess I was wrong.

P.S. By the way...most of the new "stars" don't "just want to sing". Hell, they can do that anywhere! They wanna be rich. I heard one "really big" country star say..."I paid my dues! I worked ten long years in the bars."

Fool! Ten years ain't "dues"...it's barely the "initiation fee"!

If anyone see's my comments as putting down what the Pedal steelers are playing your missing the boat.I am putting down the music and producers that do not give the instrument a real chance to contribute it's broad talent. I don't feel the Steel should dominate either, fat chance for that."see what you can do with this and I'll see if I can use steel" Tells me the producer does not have a plan to begin with and is pi$$ing in the wind. But any picker that can hang in there and get work under those circumstances should be commended.Because they are keeping the instruments foot in the door so to speak as they keep the refrigerator full.I know the reason pickers buy the instrument is to play them and with most to earn a living.

I play for the fun of it -- not the money. As long as I can play what I like, I'm having fun. To me, that's what it's all about. Hell, I'm 65 years old, not a whole lot more years to play, so I just want to enjoy it while I can. I also don't give a rats backside if the Opry fails or not. It's not a big deal nowadays like it once was -- unless it's your job.

Bob Farlow you hit the nail right on the head. If I was playing for the money it would not pay for my strings
