Recently (through the graciousness of Jim Smith and Jerry Fessenden) I acquired "my dream guitar" to play, to put it quite mildly! This monster FESSENDEN guitar has the MOST EXCELLENT TONE of any guitar I have ever laid my hands on. The Fessy hasn't failed once in what seems to be a non-stop flurry of gigs, which I can't say I ever remember happening. The descriptions of the tone of this steel from the steel players listening who remark about it range from "great -> old Sho-Bud -> early P/P Emmons -> Great" which I particularly like  . Tone is everything to me... and even my sweet little 2 year-old daughter Adele gets great tone on this steel! I send my humble thanks to Jim Smith and Jerry Fessenden for making this "dream come true" in my life! While speaking with Jerry F. about the magnificence of this instrument he expressed equal gratitude (which I would like to extend here also) to Bobbe Seymour for all of the help, support, and encouragement in the designing of this "extreme guitar"!Here she is ---> a real dream come true! Terry started to explain the tuning and the changes. I told him to stop after about half a minute, it was giving me a headache to think about the possibilities. But it shure do sound purdy when he plays it. |

Terry looks like you got two dreams come true. How you doing -B-u-d-d-y-? You know what I think of the Tone. Roberts, Ram Inn, Bluegrass, Legends FandS. Absolutely Great and Dora said kiss that baby for her. |

Terry: I was visiting with an old time friend/bass player last evening and we were comparing notes on the current generation of our grandchildren. We simply could not imagine how far they would go in our chosen field of music. So when I got home and was putting my 6 month old grandson to sleep he spotted my hand held cassette recorder on the headboard and I showed it to him. I pressed the play button and a sorry recording I had made of myself closing a show out with Sleep Walk came on. I was completely surprized by his reaction. He has never heard a steel guitar but his reactions told me he wanted to hear more so I played it several times. I can't stand it but he loved it and the little ones never lie so what am I to do....... I hope I stay around long enough to get him to the stage your little darling is at. I wish I had a picture with him holding a bar and picks on his fingers and thumb. That would be worth everything I will have to do to get him to her level. After that; GOD only knows !! We may only hope. Doesn't she remind you of a young Barbara Mandrell ?? Regards, Paul |

The guitar is an E9 with 13 strings. I am not sure where the lingo ("extended") actually came from but it is an E9th all of the way. I will post the tuning I am using now soon. (I have to type it out first.) This tuning may change slightly - but the guitar boasts a standard E9th 10 string tuning adding only a low G#, E, then B on the bottom end. Most all of the standard C6th changes are on the guitar as well. It is very easy to play since all of the top 10 strings and pedal changes are identical to nearly every E9th guitar ever built. AND... all of the C6th stuff is there with the exception it can be related to much more easily since it falls right in line with everything an E9th player has to be knowledgeable of.  |

You're right about the tone--it's something else. Neither of my Emmons guitars have seen the light of day since I got my Fessy's... I also thought one of the finest tones I heard in St. Louis was Herb Steiner's set on his Fessy. Way to go, Jerry. |

This reply is in more reguards to Terry than his new guitar. I may have been one of the first to see and hear his new Fess. and it was super and sounded great. I meet Terry at a friends (Kenny Foy of Lynville, Ky.) house about three weeks ago and we set and played until hte wee hours of the morning. I'm a nobody and he is one of the Nashville Cats. I picked up an old flat top guitar and started singing any song that came to mind and Terry fell in behind me on that new Fess and played every thing just like it had been done when it was recorded. The thing that impressed me was how he could sit down behind a new guitar with a totaly different set up-one that he had'nt finished sitting up the way he wanted it, and play like ha had been playing it all his life. The Guy is awsome. The thing I'll never forget is the way he treated me. Most Pros don't have time for people like me (amatures) but he talked to me and "cut-up" like he had known me forever. Eddie, agreed. When I was down in Nashville Terry and Mike Sweeney where nothing but friendly and gracious to me, and they don't know me from Adam. I hope I can in turn make someone else visiting my neck of the woods feel as welcome. |

I have study the setup. Chris Forbes has a point in that Terry had to stop explaine. But you can do a lot of licks on this guitar. Mr Fessenden has realy build you "your dream guitar". Goooood luck with this guitar. Bosse in Sweden (ed for sp) ------------------ |

Thanks again so much for the kindest words. I will say I am a bit partial.  With regards to the tuning... I feel it is actually quite simple to understand. Click Here to see a webpage view of the 13 string copedant in a new window There are actually 3 additional levers not listed on this copedant. (I am still experimenting with them.  )I don't think this wider neck and tuning particularly sacrifices any tone whatsoever on either side of the board (E9/6th) ...which hasn't been the case whenever I played 12 string uni-tunings in the past! |
