Kevin Brown mentioned Robert Fripp, and I do not know how I managed to leave him off my list - the man is very strange, but very amazing; a technician, but with a deep soul. Another I neglected who had a huge influence on me was Gary Green of Gentle Giant, who is a tremendous melodic player. They were a superb and "accessible" (to the listener) British progressive-rock band that injected a lot of humor in their playing, unlike most prog-rock bands, who took themselves far too seriously; I think Gary lives in Chicago now.

Also a nod to every single guitarist (including the already mentioned Paul "Mr. Moto" Johnson, who I've played with) on the "Cowabunga" Surf Music box set - those guys *were* my elementary school and Jr. High musical life and the guys who got me switched from sax to guitar.

Speaking of guitarists influenced by non=guitarists, Jim Hall said he listened mostly to pianists. And on another weird note, he put Guild buckers in his Gibsons.

Thanks to all who mentioned Don Rich. At the always amazin' Amazon.com, I got a copy of Don Rich and the Buckaroos: Country Pickin', the Don Rich anthology. I had no idea that Don was such a good fiddler and singer.
