Even though he looks like the "Poster Boy" for birth control am I alone by thinking he he has more control over the steel than most or mayhap any? This is not intended to put down any of the other greats, just an observation of mine. I was and still am cold sober when this came to my mind. Excelent comedian, showman and super picker!! His control and knowlege of the instrument are second to none!..Just my 2 cents worth.

Control is the word, all right. Once I mentioned to Joe that I was having a hard time with half-pedal technique. He said "You're letting the guitar play you. Play the guitar - don't let it play you!"

Joe's total control of the instrument is absolutely amazing to me. I love watching his right hand - his fingers barely move! What precision!

Joe Wright is the one that needs to be on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine and on Austin City Limits. The man knows NO bounderies. Slide/blues anyone?

With all the talk about R. Randolph exposing new audiences to PSG, wouldn't it be great if, while that window of opportunity is open, Joe was given a chance to shine on a program like ACL? You can always wish...

I totally enjoyed watching Joe do his thing Saturday night. He reminds me very much of Danny Gatton, who can veer off in any direction at any given time and make it sound like it was supposed to happen. I've never seen a steel player with such command and control in my lifetime. Most of the time, I'm lousy at passing out compliments, but I'll make an exception this time.

Right on, guys. Always a great show.

Control is part of it, certainly, but his knowledge of the tuning and creativity allow him to take rides that most of us cannot imagine. He plays as broad of range of music as anyone, but I'm hooked on his "Steeling the Country Classics" CD's.

Check out Joe's songwriting on his Daddy's Dream CD, with his daughter, Harmoni. I have to believe that even with a ton of steel, these songs have commercial appeal.

Its time Joe Wright got the national industry recognition that he deserves. The man INVENTED his own right hand style! I am going to start writing some letters and make some phone calls. Joe, you are a world class player, and most inportantly a world class person.

Not to partronize either player, but just imagine that you're Joe Wright and you're reading what Buddy Emmons has just written about you in this public forum.

Gosh! That has to be some feeling.

Thanks for everything Joe. I'm real happy for you. Keep up the great show.

I've often thought that Joe Wright has the potential to do for steel what Bela Fleck did for banjo -- he has that crossover appeal.

We need to find that boy a manager who knows what to do with him. Just my opinion, but I think the rock and the Spyro Gyra type of material that Joe played at the convention a few year's ago are the repertoire that would really let him stretch out and find that new audience.

My wife and I spoke several times of Joe's performance while driving back to Denver. I really feel that his set was the one premier performance of the week! One could only play that thing that way only if he understood the steel at a masters level!

What a performance!

Wow! I'm impressed too! Imagine...getting a compliment like that from one of the "masters" of the instrument. Joe, you're going to have to buy a new hat, that's for sure! The only compliment I ever got from a big-name steeler was from Bobbe Seymour. He said..."Man, you sure have a lot of hair!"

Amen to everything that’s already been said. I do think Joe had a special glow about him with his daughter there! Harmoni is a doll – and has a lovely voice!! I think SHE had a special glow around Dad, as well! They both seemed very proud of each other. It was a VERY NICE touch to the weekend.

Joe, Bring your daughter to some of our shows. We all would love to see her. I am glad to hear all the good things being said about you here. We always enjoy hearing you. Austin has to fight to stay awake to hear you when you are around, but he usually comes alive when you are on stage. Good luck in the future. The whole family enjoys you. The Newberry's

Joe has been the star player at the Brisbane Convention the last 2 years and his performances have been fantastic. His knowledge and control of the instrument is second to none but he is also an entertainer. He is a natural comedian and never fails to connect with his audience. Above all his love of SteelGuitar shines through in his enthusiasm, in his playing and especially in his teaching seminars, which are a must. His approach to playing the instrument is quite different and very logical. Joe deserves much more credit for both his playing and his promotion of SteelGuitar. A great player and a great guy....IP

Man.......looks like I've been very unfortunate not to ever have seen Joe play. When Buddy gets on this and says he reminds him of Danny Gatton.........look out. I have seen Danny play and can't even imagine how good Joe must be to have a compliment from the steel guitar God himself.

My hats off to him.

All of us here in the Wolverine State are very proud of Joe. He is a wonderfully talented Steel Guitarist and truly a fine "technician". BTW, Joe, I'll bet you liked that MI-CMU score! Hope to see you at the "big house". Frank and Molly Rogers

Yes , Joe is great. Every time I hear him again he is a lot better. He has never stopped learning and working at it . He's world class and still climbing and I think he dosen't have a clue to how good he really is. And besides that he's a great guy.

I'll second all remarks about Joe. He's got what it takes to be a real showman, and also pretty darn good video producer, as the Emmons/Rugg DVD shows. My son Mike still talks about helping Joe set up for that taping. Thanks for the DVD Joe.

I wrote daily reviews of the convention for my friends. This excerpt was written Saturday evening.

Later, it was time for Joe Wright, an incredibly talented musician from Jackson, Michigan, just up the road. After a goofy introduction, he played a tune or two in the style people were accustomed to hear in this venue. Then he pulled out the stops and played heavy rock, heavier electric, overdriven blues, and then mixed back in a few more country ballad-ish tunes. Only a very few people in the audience still had their socks on. Back when Joe was 21, he explained, he played a concert and was intimidated by having Buddy Emmons in the audience. Buddy was now enjoying the show from his perch right on stage. Joe, this evening, was clearly not intimidated. He may very well, after all, be poised to take over as the most driving force, and I mean Force, in the world of steel.

David,

Joe has a series called "Steeling the Country Classics". At last count, I think he's up to Vol. 7. If you like country music you should have these. He's now offering an 80-song, 4.5 hour disc of MP3's. To get you started, try the Vol. 1, 2 & 3, 2-disc set -- which he sells for around $30.

The new CD he did with his daughter is fantastic. It's called "A Daddy's Dream". It has 8 instrumentals and 8 vocals; 1 sung by Joe, the others by his daughter, Harmoni.

Not only a great player, he is a great educator, willing to share his vast knowledge of the instrument. He also posts regularly here on the Forum and was very helpful to me when I ,as a newbie, was deciding whether to go D10 or U12 (I went U12).

I'm watching/listening to the Joe Wright/Sarah Jorey video, and Joe's playing and showmanship are incredible. He's a gift to the instrument, and the instrument is a gift in his hands! And he and Sarah make for a good visual contrast, as well. All in all, two excellent players, who bring that "extra" to steel guitar.

When I first saw him at a convention a couple of years ago, I couldn't wait to dislike him. The whole setup where he comes out as a slow-witted dufus really irritated me. But as I sat there I started laughing and then listened to what he was doing. He blew me away. What a refreshing change from all the previous players of the weekend. Now when I attend a convention, I can't wait for him to perform. His version of House of the Rising Sun is still a memory I wish I could relive.
