![]() Can anyone come up the the names of the steel players that have played with Mel during his Statesiders career? I know that Paul Franklin was with him for four years. The late Johnny Gore played Sax with Mel for twenty years and I believe that there were probably a few steeler changes during those years. Isn't Terry Bethel Mel's steel player now? Thanks for any info. Dave A. Burley |

![]() Dave, I know some of the players that were there, not in order. Jim Baker Terry Bethel 1969-1979 Paul Franklin Phil Coontz Joe McGuffey Bruce Bouton John Cox Terry Bethel 1989-1993 Tim Sergent 1993 He could of had more, I don't know. I left for ten years, so he could of had a couple I didn't know about. I am working in Branson, with Paul Harris. It is the hottest show in town, so if any of you are out this way, stop in and I'll let you buy the coffee!!!!!! Terry |

![]() Yes Tim Sergent is one great player. When I left I recommended Tim for the job with Mel. Tim has a great resume, Larry Boone, Ricky Staggs, Clay Walker, Pam Tillis, The Dixie Chicks, and now Mel Tillis. He also plays Dobro and is a great Banjo Player, but don't hold that against him. He is a great person as well as a great player, and I am proud to call him my friend. Terry Bethel |

![]() I booked Mel and Charlie Louvin on a show in Holland, Michigan back in about 1970. I believe that Neal Flanz was Charlie's steel player at the time but I forget just who was the early steeler with Mel. I knew him at the time by my age has gotten the best of me. Anyone remember? Thanks, Dave Burley |

![]() WOW!!! I'd like to save this post and use it as my screen saver or something! The best thing about having to drive 8 hours to Branson to meet the bus is getting to spend time with Terry Bethel and his lovely wife Pat. I sometimes get to go over to his house (if time permits) and sit and listen to him play and I can't begin to tell you what a treat and shear pleasure that is. He is one of the most innovative and underrated players out there. His ideas are incredible! Just listen to his album. If you haven't got it you should add it to your collection. His ideas with split strings is amazing. It sounds like he's splitting every string 5 or 6 different ways, but he says he usually only uses his 6th string splitter. What a player!! Terry, it's indeed an honor to be sitting in your spot on stage with Mel Tillis and the other crazy nuts in that band. (Notice I was smart enough not to say that I took his place!!!)... But it's even more of an honor to call you a dear friend. Take care and tell Pat I said hello. See you guys soon!! Love ya Brother! Tim p.s. Kenny, Tim |

![]() I am happy to say that I was a Statesider from 1986 to 1989, what a gig that was. Terry, It took myself, Paul F., Phil, Joe and Bruce to sub for you that 10 years. Terry Bethel is the Statesider steel player, the rest of us just sit in his chair. Johnny Cox |
