you can add to the list, Julian Tharpe, Dave Musgrave, Danny Mohammad, Steve Palousik, Mike Cass, Mike Sweeney, Jim Murphy, Stu Basore. I know there have been alot of other guys but I'm too tired to think of any of them now.

Don't forget Curly and Hal. That is if you want to include the studio guys too, as in an above post.

Are you talking about recording players or those who have worked in the band on the road?

Here's some trivia for the topic. How many individuals do you know that played more than one instrument for Price, steel guitar being one of them?

Man, that's a lot of different steelers!

Just what is it with this Price character that he can't keep a steelplayer?

Frank Rogers played a tour with Ray.
Was asked repeatly to stay in the band, but could not because of other demands on his life at the time.
He said he did like being a Cherokee Cowboy for a little while. Evelyn

Fred,

I think Jimmy Day also doubled on Bass. Did BE also play guitar with Ray Price (like he did with ET?)

Here is an interesting list of musicians that were in the studio with Ray Price, some of them hard to believe:

Johnny Bond (Guitar)
Leon Rhodes (Guitar)
Walter Haynes (Guitar)
Eddie Hill (Guitar)
Paul Buskirk (Mandolin)
Earl Scruggs (Banjo)
Charlie Louvin (Guitar)
Roger Miller (Guitar)
Johnny Paycheck (Guitar)
Willie Nelson (Guitar)
Darrell McCall (Guitar)

Pretty impressive list!

Buddy Hrabal was too humble to include himself is that prestiges list. Thanks Herb for including him.
The only time I have ever seen Buddy was in St. Louis in '86 or '87, he played and sang great. I especially enjoyed his humor; after singing a few Price songs he said there was another guy in the band who generally sang those songs.

Well I certainly don't know about Day or Paycheck, but I do know that Reece Anderson was Price's steeler and Julian Tharpe, who was one of Reece's best friends, came back to Dallas and was badly in need of a job.

Reece went to Blondie Caldrone and volunteered to go on bass, because the bass player was leaving, and that would open up the steeling job for Julian. In short Blondie agreed, and away they went.

The last time I talked to Blondie, before he passed, was in '97 or '98 at the Red River Valley Exposition in Paris, Texas, and he introduced me to his bass player at that time. If I'm not mistaken, and I could very well be, the bass man was Blondie's Nephew, or was kin to him some way. One hell of a musician in any case.

That bass player was Fernando Calderon. He waa Moses' brother. He now plays drums for Ray.
Curley did alot of work for Cam Mullins who, was the arranger for tunes like "For The Good Times", "Danny Boy", " I Won't Mention It Again" etc.. Curley playes steel on some Price things but most of the time he played rythm guitar on those sessions.
On some alternate cuts that weren't released untill the Bear family box set such as one cut of "Danny Boy" Pete Drake played steel.

Mike, I now remember his first name. He was a super player, as I remember and they even featured him on a long solo ride on one song. I talked to him later on the phone and I believe he was living in San Antonio perhaps. A nice guy at least. Thanks for reminding.

I played guitar for Ray for about 6 months and left to work with George Jones...the guy who got me the job with Ray was Bobbe Seymour...when he left,Steve Palousek joined us...Buddy Emmons did a couple of shows during that time as well...I played steel on one show with Ray-it was after I had gone to work for George and Blondie called and asked if I could meet them at the Executive Inn in Paducah to play steel as someone had to bail on them...Hank Singer(he was with GJ by then too)and I drove up and played the show...it was really fun!

If Im not mistaken, JD Maness played on Ray's album: "Say I Do". Also, JD played some shows over the years with Ray Price & The Cherokee Cowboys. I know for sure he played with them @ the Crazy Horse Steak House in Orange Co.Ca. a couple of times.

I forgot one. That would be Walter Haynes. He was on the "Make The World Go Away" session. He played because Buddy was out with a broken ankle. That of course is another story.

Here's my take on the Ray Price thing..........
For the past few years.....
Ray is known to be a well established singer,so what I think he does is keep a few key personall to travel with him. As most of you'all know,he hires the local Phil' orchastal(sp) and the best local professiponal Steel player(s) in the area for his shows. Now this isn't to say that player X is better than player X, but just good business. He dosen't have to keep a person on payroll for his shows. While good Professional Steel Players are sometimes not avalable, the local (lesser known) talent is up to the challange and is able to do a professional job for him. Henceforth, we see many good Steel players who have the oppertunity to play with The Great One,Mr, Ray Price.

of course, I'll never be one of those players.

Johnny Paycheck on steel for Price, I don't think so. Buddy was on board for most of his stint, so kinda redundant.
He was mainly playing bass in bands in the early 1960s, I don't think he took up steel onstage until the mid 1960s.
A lot gets said about Paycheck, his stint with George Jones gets painted like he was with him from 1962 to 1966, like he was there the whole time and just switched around on instruments. Paycheck bailed on the group quite reguarly, and rejoined when he could, taking the instrument that was needed.

When Willie Nelson and Paycheck were with Price (at different times) Charlie Harris was his rhythm player and vocalist, so they were bassists.

I'm with you Bill. A friend of mine ( Jimmy Powell from north Florida) played with Price when he did a tour through Florida A year or so ago. And might I add he is a veryyyyy good brand x if you want to call him that. He can rock with the best of them. Bye

I think it would be a lot easier to name steel players that haven't worked with Ray Price. The list would be a lot shorter. Great music, but the job left some to be desired, as most of you players already know.
I'm saying this in humor but......

When I played a southern California show with Ray Price around 1990, he brought a bus and only 2 musicians (drums and keys). He used 6 of us local players (guitar, bass, steel, 3 violins).
There was no rehearsal or preparation, but I think the drummer talked to us for a few seconds before the show and gave us a song list. He also had parts for the violinists to read.

A pianist friend, Bob Hallahan (a great jazz player) got a call to sub into Ray's band on one occaision. At one point when a steel solo came up (Bob didn't mention the steeler) Ray walked over and placed his hand on Bob 's shoulder and whispered, "...just lay out son!".

You can also add Russ Hicks, who took Buddy's place in the 60s. And Junior Knight who played guitar for Ray in 1967 at the ripe old age of 17.

Paycheck had a revolving door between Price and Jones from about '61 or '62 till '65 when his Little Darlin' career took off after his cut of "A-11".

Mike didn't Johnny work for Faron in that same time frame. I read somewhere that he and Darrell McCall shifted back and forth between Price and Faron.
