Around the time that JFK was assassinated; I was in grade school in a small farming community named Kingsburg, Ca. One day we were called into our little cafeteria for an assembly. Right in the middle of the cafeteria was a double-neck Pedal Steel Guitar. A mustoched gentleman gave us a little mini-concert that day. He had lots of gimmicks, and one of them was a "talk-box". This was around the time the song "Forever" was being played a lot on the radio stations. I seem to recall that he had a "Handle-bar" mustoche. He was real jolly, a big kidder with everyone, and I believe he had some nephews and/or nieces living in our community which is how he came to be at our school. I believe that he told us that he played a lot of different schools for kids. I remember he had a great big car. One of those big "tuna-boat" types. I remember thinking to myself that he needed a big car because he had so much equipment, and although I can't remember his name, he had a big impact on my musical life. Does anybody have any idea who it might have been?

Bob, sorry I can't help you with this gentleman's name, but I want to comment on your story. This person was probally giving away his time in an attempt to share his music and his love of music. I think it would be great if something of this type program would be possible now.
The Spongebob Squarepants sound tracks of the recent years has many kids wondering what makes those sounds, and when a child wonders,it can lead to many pleasurable and possibly great experiences...This gentleman of your memory was succesful with you it seems...I wish you good luck in finding him,and if you do please let us know and perhaps tell us more of the history of his programs...

Lynn,
The thing that I forgot to mention was, he also took the time to tell us about his God. Of course being a "Preachers-kid" (PK) at the time, it really took me by storm. And, that also had a big impact on me. Today I'm more than sure that he would be "barred" from any American school which is sad!

I don't think that would have been Al. If I remember right, he first "found" religion in the late 70's. It was a little after he ripped us off for the heel-toe Dekley I built for him, and a little before he said it was stolen from his church and he couldn't pay for it.

For some reason, I have been under the impression that it might have been "Speedy West" after seeing a picture of Speedy when he had a mustache. I believe the picture was in Winnie Winston's instructional book. Same build, smoking a cigarette with it inbetween his pinky and the next finger of his right hand. In fact, I use to think that was way cool, and when I use to smoke, and it was legal to do here in California in bars, I learned to hold my cigarettes the same way. Little did I know! About cigarettes that is!

Speedy was in Oklahoma around the time period you mention (1963), he had the second band at the Cimmaron Ballroom, and was working locally with Fender OK office.

Dunno if he'd have time to got to a grade school in small-town Kingsburg, Ca.
Of course, he might have had family there, Ok transplants perhaps?
