I read where he tuned the 10th string to A with the A pedal down. I know Jimmie Crawford has done that. Tony |

Jim released a video a little while back called "Legends of the Steel Guitar", mostly a (very interesting) talk tape, with some music examples. The players are Big Jim, Stu Basore, Tommy White and Don Helms. In that video, Jim explains in detail how he used the lowered 10th string on a lot of records. Really a great idea. I have a cassette tape I made of Jim vest at Scotties in 97 or so I think? He was playing his steel and singing at the same time with his band he plays with in Nashville, man I swear he is one of the best singers in this old world. I love his steel playing as well but no one I ever heard can touch his singing. I don't understand how this man never was a star vocalist??? What a nice person. His band was great as well. I was in Nashville (or at least in touch with the scene) when Jim did these great sessions (seems like he also did "Take this Job and Shove it"). The story going around at the time was that Jim got his first break in the studio because Billy Sherrill was peeved at Pete Drake for some reason (don't know why) and decided to peeve Pete back by using somebody outside of the A team on his sessions. Jim Vest certainly did well in the studio, and had a lot of that raw steel vibe that Pete Drake was famous for. |

Jim also played on our bandleaders album a couple years back. I had the pleasure of being at that session and seeing a master at work. He tried to show me that Gosdin lick but I couldn't get the jist of it. ------------------ |

Big Jim graced us with his presence Tuesday nite at the NTSGA jam also at my fish fry the week before with a wonderful array of large scale, fully operational (battery powered) model boats which he demonstraed on the fish pond. Big Jim Vest is a joy to be around and I sure do wish I were around him more. |

jim's a great guy... i met him in california..opened for him and joe stampley. a friend of mine called him once and he talked him through how to retune and play set 'em up joe on the phone...had him play it back and forth, etc.. real nice! |
