Jerry, this subjest has been covered a few times in the past on the forum. One of the great things about the forum is being able to use the"search" option to research the data base. In there you will find Buddy answering questions about his equipment and sound. Just enter "Buddy Emmons" under the "steel players" or "pedal steel" subject and hit enter. It will access all of the Buddy Emmons discussions.

Jerry,
There is no definitive answer to that question. Over the fifty years I’ve been playing I’ve managed to maintain a reasonably consistent sound in spite of the many different brands and combination of equipment I’ve used. Because of that I believe developing “your” sound is the first step, followed by equipment that best compliments that sound or technique. I, along with other players I know, developed the personal or signature sound through the hands. I arrive at the equipment sound through the feeling it gives me while playing. That feeling is when the notes respond to the touch in such a way that you don’t have to force anything or overplay to get the sound that pleases you best.

I’m down to an Emmons push/pull, a Legrande lll, and a JCH, but I don’t favor one over the other until I decide how I want to use them. If I want a good sound plus the ultimate in pedal and knee capabilities and new changes, I’ll choose the JCH. For a good combination of tone and mechanics without the new stuff, it’s the Legrande. And for the ultimate sound sprinkled with a little nuisance value, I’d play the push/pull as a reminder that you can get the job done without the bells and whistles.

The man comes through again! Buddy, I literally hang on your every word; it would be the ultimate for me (and I'm sure others) if you would write a book. May I suggest consider an outline of what you would like to put in print about the psg, your history with the design and mechanics and maybe what you consider the necessary basics of music theory in regard to the psg. And things that you feel good about writing, that feeling that evokes that musical genius. I have been a fan of yours since I first heard you with ET. I used to frequent a bar in Fussa, Japan (way back) and as soon as I would sit at the bar, the bartender would put on an ET record. Ah, the good old days.......

“Without the Bells and Whistles”! That's my favorite listening-pleasure. The slightest-delay and a bit of reverb will do me fine! (And of course, Buddy's ‘fine-touch’.)

Stop and ponder for a moment the pure musical genius of Buddy Emmons, and his ongoing accomplishments, ie., experimenting with different tunings, guitars, amps, etc., and the biggie, taking his time to answer our questions.

To me this says it all about his character and love and devotion for our beloved instrument. I've had musicians answer my questions with insinuations, "Learn it like I did", and not give you any direction, whatsoever. Again, thanks, to Buddy, Paul, Bobbe, and all the "pros" who take their time to enhance our devotion to steel guitar by making our learning a little easier and enjoyable.

Thanks, guys.

It's good to hear some common sense w/ regard to gear for a change. I have observed that, the better the player, the less he's obsessed with his "stuff". Brand names aren't important- in the end, these instruments are just tools of the trade, and you match your tool to the task at hand. Thanks, Buddy, for the workingman's perspective.

Buddy I remember you saying that you find it more difficult to get a great tone from the E9 neck,
I can't help but ask,would your best E9 tone
come from your PP and Standel?
Thanx for your great responses, by the way,

Greg,
The P/P and Standel were a good marriage but my favorite tone on a steel guitar is not the tone I’m normally associated with. I have two sets of ears, so as a listener, the steel/amp combination I remember being most satisfied with was the Bigsby and Standel. Another good combo for me was the early 25 inch scale Sho~Bud permanent model with the early Peavey Session 400 amps.

Stephen…
Today I have two Peavey amps, a Standel, and a Fender Steel King. I favor the Steel King because it has a sweet spot in the mid range similar to the Standel but is less prone to distortion.

And thanks, Nick. I wish you and everyone on the Forum the very best during the holidays and beyond.

Of the three guitars I mentioned above, the JCH has a ten string E9 and 12 string C6 neck, so the experimentation continues.

Hi Roy. It’s good to hear from you again. Recording as you play is highly recommended but I rarely do it, so some of the good stuff does get lost once in a while. For the most part though, the cream rises to the top and I manage to salvage it. I guess the plus side of forgetting a lick is trying to remember how I played it and finding something new in the process.

String some notes together into a heartfelt slow melody with her name on it when the inspiring mood hits you. I know we'd love to hear it.

REALLY Funny, John......Yea, Man, I KNOW JUST what you were thinking and feeling. BIG TIME Funny how our Emotions that we try SO HARD to Control at the MOST IMPORTANT TIME in our Life just GOES OUT THE WINDOW when we meet our "Mentors" and "Gurus" for the first time......And WHEN it happens...WOW...Your control over your emotions gets "Short Circuited" with TOO MUCH "ADRINALIN" and ya just might as well do the BEST you can with what ya have LEFT, (Whtch, BTW, is VERY LITTLE).....Face It....Ya LOST IT.....I KNOW I DID.
I needed something like what you had for wiping Buddys' tennis shoes that day when I met him for the first time in '83 at "Hot Licks" (How IRONIC) studio where he was recording. Sometimes I wonder just what Buddy REALLY THINKS AFTER meeting perhaps a "NEWBIE" or even a seasoned player who has ALWAYS wanted to met him, and now is the chance of a LIFETIME to "Make it Happen." Now just IMAGINE if you will, some of the things Buddy (AND Peggy)HEARS/HAVE HEARD and SEES/HAVE SEEN and is/has been Asked of him through ALL his YEARS of being the "BIG E"
and what SOME people DO & SAY because of their plain STUPIDITY, or,just having "BUTTERFLIES" before the "BIG MEETING" with Buddy. Just to hear what people say or see how they act when they get "NEAR" him and meet him for the first time. Buddy, Now, THERE'S you a BOOK just WAITING to be Publised that you could write with a STORYLINE ALL BY ITSELF......Think about it.......A book About the Few, crazy, Insane, Nutty people (ME INCLUDED, HA) and when they met you for the First time, and HOW they acted &nd what they SAID to you, (Oh, BOY) and SURELY there's been a FEW that was about a "Half Bubble Off," a "Tad" CRAZY, a little INSANE, perhaps a few who came to you with some REALLY WEIRD "IDEAS," and these "GIFTED" few "PESTERED" the Hell outta you, TRYING to get you to look at this NEW and IMPROVED "IDEA" and what you think about it and if you can do anything with it because SOME STILL think you STILL work for the Emmons Guitar Co. A LIFETIME of LAUGHS for Sure. I BET you DO get some SUPER "BRAIN STORMERS" though.
Yea, I can just IMAGINE hearing him now talking to his Wife, Peggy, as they are driving back home after one of the Major Shows....."Honey, You remember that one poor Fellow who SHOULD HAVE TAKEN the "HERE'S YOUR SIGN" yearly award"? "You Know, Babe, the guy with NO TEETH, that had that DEEP SOUTH SOUTHERN "DRAWL" and every time he spoke, we couldn't understand a THING HE SAID," except, "I LOVE YOU, BUDDY, I LOVE YOU, BUDDY, YOU DA MAN!" "He Kept saying that OVER & OVER" "Yea, Honey, HIM, THAT'S the ONE" "What a RIOT HE WAS, didn't you think so, Peg"? "Now, THAT guy was "OUT THERE", and he just couldn't get HOLD of himself...Lost ALL COMPOSER to say the Least." "And we COULDN'T GET RID of him, Either" "Kept FOLLOWING us EVERYWHERE in the motel." "GEEEZ"
I would imagine that Not only Buddy, but, MANY Steel Playing "ICONS" go through it. And I'm SURE it gets OLD FAST to too. Even back in '83, I was hesitant about asking to met Buddy, because I figured he would feel "Put Out" by doing me this "ONCE in a LIFE TIME" Favor for me. Boy, was I WRONG, for when I DID Meet him and shook his hand, I damn Near Fell over stepping on MY OWN TOUNGE (All the while DRIPPING "YUCK" upon HIS shoes ) He went out of his way to make me feel WELCOME and did all to make that few "KEWL" moments in MY life VERY "SPECIAL"......And it WAS, Buddy!....I Do hope Buddy realizes (And I'm SURE he Does) that he "MAKES SOMEONES' DAY" EVERY TIME he takes the time out of HIS BUSY LIFE just to sign an autograph or answer a silly question or get his photo taken with us "Little People."
I know that the picture that I have on my wall of that day in '83 of us together means more than Buddy will ever know. And I Thank You ONCE AGAIN, Buddy, And God Bless you. And a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL....AND YOU ALL KNOW THE "REST"

Thank you Ron. Yes there are rare occasions when I meet someone and the timing isn’t always good for me. For example, I was at my booth in St. Louis before the convention opened, running from one end to the other, placing our product on the table and trying set up my steel when someone walks up with a smile and says, “Before you get busy, would you sign an autograph for me?” Well, I assumed from the sweat running down my face that he could tell I had already passed the busy point, but I shook his hand and signed his program book.

I suppose there are some stories out there about times I’ve eased over the edge, but it was more than likely due to a personal problem and had nothing to do with the person on the receiving end. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I’ll never forget the first time I met Jerry Byrd at Buck Lake Ranch in Angola Indiana. I was a kid stumbling to find words to ask him if I could have a picture taken with him. I finally asked and when he said yes he put his hand on my shoulder and I trembled like a leaf. I know he felt it, and I’ve had the same experience with people that I have pictures made with; and when I feel it, it always brings me back to that moment at the Buck Lake Ranch.

Most professional players I know feel the same way. We never forget how we started and unless it’s somebody purposely gouging you to test your mettle, it’s quite easy to be nice to someone who sincerely appreciates you and your work.

Come on Now, Buddy....YOU? The "Big E"? You...Ahhh, STUMBLED, TRIPPED, and FELL? Over WHO, You say? OK, I SEEE NOW, Sir! Ahhh, The GREAT Mr BYRD HIMSELF, huh? SOOO, there IS a HUMAN who CAN, and DID, DEVASTATE Your WHOLE "BEING" BEYOND "MORTAL" REPAIR? YEA.....I DO BELIEVE that I, Buddy, From MY HUMBLING EXPERIENCE, May I say that I TRULY UNDERSTAND, Sir, JUST how YOU FELT during YOUR "KODAK MOMENT" (And If I had it to Blow, I Would have gave A MILLION $$$ to have SEEN YOUR "AGONY" and "WOE" LOL) But, again, to some of us, it IS HARD to BELIEVE, And, I'm sitting here giggling about YOUR story. Life Is FULL of HUMAN "KODAK MOMENTS"...And I just BET 'Cha that God and his ANGELS are shareing THEIR "QUALITY TIME" by "passing Earths'Scrapbook" around to All of our Loved ones who has passed on, and I'm SURE they are "CRACKING UP" over OUR SILLY EPISODES here on Earth. Getting back to the point here, Just KNOWING Now how Mr Byrd had "Rattled YOUR CAGE" is Both funny AND Comforting to many of us folks, and I'm sure many can now "Approch" you with more confedence. Truly, I can't for the LIFE of me though, see HOW you could NOT FORGET an IDIOT like ME, standing there, Just Shaking your hand for ETERNITY, with a STUPID "GLAZE" over my Eyes, Stuttering Something in some unknown Kentucky "Holler-Jibbrish" that even I MYSELF couldn't understand, and the WORST PART about all this was the fact that I NEVER SAW my Boss the WHOLE TIME standing BEHIND you TRYING with ALL his might to get my Attention so he could SORTA tell me with his Body LANGUAGE to LET GO of your hand, and STOP BEING SUCH AN ASS! NO ONE EVER with ANY "SOCIAL STATUS" has EVER EFFECTED me like that, and I hope I never go thru THAT again, because I'm TOO OLD to Experience "SUCH a RUSH" AGAIN. I realize that in GOD'S EYES, We ALL are HUMANS, Both GREAT & SMALL, and God made all of us EQUAL, no matter who we THINK we are. I suppose that in a weird way, People who hold "Prestige," "Clout" and "Social Power" simply "Rattle" the Common folks because of the way the common folks LOOK & THINK of them. With TOTAL RESPECT, and the UTMOST REGARD.
Thanks Buddy...You MADE my DAY.....AGAIN.
