As you may or may not know, I'm helping in the research of the history of steel/dobro players with a gentleman from the University of Maryland.

The name Cliff Carlisle keeps coming up. He was the older brother of "Jumping" Bill Carlisle of The Carlisles. I have found the following from an internet search, but I would like to hear from someone who either knew him, played in the same band, or has any knowledge of his music background:

"His most obvious distinction was that he apparently chose to accompany himself exclusively on lap steel guitar."

"Given Name: Clifford Raymond Carlisle
Date of Birth: May 6, 1904
Place of Birth: Mount Eden, Kentucky
Date of Death: April 2, 1983"

"Cliff was a pioneer in adapting the steel guitar and Dobro to Country music, starting with a small standard Martin played Hawaiian-style and gradually moving up to a metal-bodied National, a Dobro, and finally to an instrument of his own design."

I would like to know if anyone knows what that guitar looked like.

Any assistance will certainly be appreciated.

On the way to Dallas tomorrow. Yeeeehah!!

Cliff started playing Hawaiian music, which was big in the beginning of the 20th century, and even played on the vaudeville circuits. He did yodeling blues (which he learned from Jimmie Rodgers), hobo music, and finally went to hillbilly music, as country music was called back then. He cut his first record in 1924, a year before the Opry started. He was one of the first, if not the first, to play Hawaiian guitar on the Opry.

Jamie, thanks for the advice. We have already gone to that site, but we're looking for any additional information on Carlisle, preferably from someone who has personal or 2nd hand info on him. Thanks for the help though.
