'Uptown To Country' was one of the first albums I was exposed to when I took up steel in the UK back in the '70s, and 'My Funny Valentine' remains one of my all-time favourite PSG recordings.

I didn't actually see Doug 'live' until the late-'90s after I first came to the US - I watched and listened spellbound by his virtuosity. I was so affected by the musicality of his work that I was unable to listen to the next player (a top name, by the way, and a fine player himself) preferring to leave the room and assimmilate what I'd just heard!

I've heard Doug a number of times since that day, and each time I find myself thinking that he's surely the very best player on the planet; his relatively low-profile is no doubt due to his gentle and almost self-effacing manner.

I just have to kick in my two cents here. A few years back Doug came to Columbia, MO and performed with a jazz trio in a jazz club setting and I had the honor and privelege of getting to know him as a friend. He is definitely one of the most "real" and humble men I have ever met. I shall always treasure that weekend at "Murry's" jazz club. I also know that some of those "jazz" musicians that backed him are now big Doug Jernigan fans.

I only met Doug once but I'll never forget it. It was around 1986 or so, my wife and our young daughter were driving from N.Y. back to California. I always wanted to go to a real Steel Guitar shop (I don't remember the name) so we stopped in Nashville to find one and to also do some record buying. We asked around and got directions to a Steel Guitar store. At the store I was really enjoying being in a room full of steels when this guy pulls up out front on a motorcycle with a miniature steel strapped on back. He comes in the store, walks right up to me saying I have to check out his steel he just had built for him. He takes a pac-a-seat, puts it on the floor without the legs extended and starts playing a blistering version of Orange Blossom Special. I was in total awe. One of the other customers tapped me on the shoulder and told me that the player was indeed Doug Jernigan. Once Doug finished, he talked with us for a while, let us take his picture then strapped the tiny steel back on his motorcycle and raced off. He was not only a great player but a warm and friendly person as well. I'll try and find the picture we took and post it on the Forum.

Doug Jernigan is the most amazing steel player I've ever heard in my life, and in my opinion... the fastest steel picker in the world! I've yet to see anybody play that fast and yet, be so accurate with every note. Whenever I'm at a show he's playing at I make sure to never miss his performance. Absolutely amazing!

I was fortunate enough to attend Doug's seminar in Mesa this year. Besides learning a major amount of good stuff that still keeps me busy, it was a blast to see Doug play. A Super-Great player, and a hellova nice guy also.

The photos wiil show Doug in 1961 or 1962. I was stationed at Naval Air Stition Saufley Field and Doug and I picked together around the Pensacola area. Doug was a monster on both necks at this early age. Special notice should be taken of the gentleman with the DeAngelico guitar. His name is Clyde Kendrick and his tutelage gave Doug his foundation in Pop and Jazz. I happen to be the "studly" bass player.(LOL)

Don't forget Doug's great double album with Vasser Clemens, Dvid Bromberg and many other greats, "Hillbilly Jazz".

This gets you up on your feet, alright.

If you haven't gotten Doug's latest album..."Speed Pickin' and Country Ballads"...www.digndoug.com...you should order it. That will answer any questions about if Doug is still playing or not! Doug is way at the top of my "hero" list.

I always play 'Jazz by Jernigan' to friends who are unfamiliar to Steel Guitar, to me it is one of the best Steel Cds. I too wish Doug would come to the NYC Jazz scene and mix it up alittle.

Steve, regarding my new Zum PSG I have the anti-cabinet drop. It takes some of the "E" drop out of the fourth string. Although I have the same pickups in all three of my Zums, it sounds a little brighter than the other two Zums. The pickups are PF-1's.

Thanks again for everyone's kind remarks..

Mr. Doug is an astounding player and a very patient and effective teacher. He is one of the nicest people I know. I just got back in March from his three day one-on-one school and I have been woodshedding since. His knowledge of the steel is incredible! I learned and continue each day to learn in great strides from his instruction. Mr. Doug, don't forget to give me and Mr. Clyde a buzz when your down around South Alabama and we will hit the lake in search of some big Bass and Brim.
