I just got to have lunch...well actually it was a big piece of coconut cream pie!...with one of my all time favorite players, Mike Smith. I took a shot in the dark and emailed him since I knew he lived in Phoenix and we are doing a show tonight here, and he was gracious enough to reply and he picked me up at the gig and we had a nice visit over a piece of pie and some iced tea. What a great guy and a great player. If you don't have his CD, "Dreams of India" you need to add it to your collection. I had it on cassette several years ago, but wore it out trying to figure out his licks. I've got it on CD now so I'll probably wear out before it does. I just wanted to thank Mike publicly for a really nice visit. It's always nice when one of your favorite players turns out to be such a nice person to boot. Thanks again, Mike, Tim |

Mike Smith is one of all time favorite players! He tone and execution is incredible and his approach to playing has always been so fresh. When I heard 'Brown Baggin' years ago (Shades of India) that won me over! Wish Mike would produce another CD (hint) |

I have a nice memory of a visit years ago with Mike myself. A real gentleman, and a monster player... And a fellow "Parisite" Tim, you and I met once and I got to tell you I came away with the same feeling...! I thought, man, what a steel player! Then I saw you play some acoustic guitar on a Chicks show and you were just shredding it! Must be them Kentucky roots...! Thanks for posting this. Mike keeps a low profile, but he is truly one of the best and is deserving of more attention. ------------------ |

This post has reminded me that it's now four years since Mike reissued 'Dreams...' on CD. I bought it immediately, and was particularly impressed by the two new tracks he'd added. A brief e-mail exchange with Mike elicited the possibilty that more new tracks could be on the way, and a new Mike Smith album might be in our future. Well, it hasn't happened yet, but I live in hope.... He is, without doubt, one of THE most musical players we've ever seen - another CD would be really great for all of us! Please, Mike? RR |

I had the honor to work with Mike when I first came to Nashville and got to know him well. His playing is only surpassed by the kind of guy he is. He is truly one of the greats! |

Thank you Tim for the nice words (and thanks to all of you for responding as well!). I don't stay in touch with my roots as I'd like to and I do feel a bit isolated at times. But, I'm thankful I've found a little niche out here and am being blessed with work. Now, if anyone likes carrying P.A. equipment, heavy amps, dry climate and likes working for free, man have I got the dream gig for you  By the way, Tim Sergent is a very nice young man who I can tell loves his craft and is very passionate about it. He's also very respectful of others who play this wacky instrument...thanks Tim. Mike |

Hey Brett, T and I are working on a variety CD now and we hope to have it done by the end of summer. It'll have a few instrumentals but mostly a variety of the stuff our band does now. By the way, I've heard that you too have taken up steel along with a few other local cats. T will like the fact that she'll have more options than just me. Mike |

Yeah Mike it's true. I bought a 75 Emmons p/p and a 68 ZB s10. I got the bug! T may have more choices but none of us can flog a steel like you can! |
