I've been listening to Hals' Take Me As I Am from the 2004 Convention (over and over

Man, I really miss him. That was my first convention and Hal's set was one of my favorite memories.

Does anyone know what pickups were on his Zum and what ever became of that beautiful guitar?

God bless you, Hal!

I'm pretty sure Hal had the Bill Lawrence 910's on his Zum's , but perhaps not this early

John Swain is correct.

Hal had Lawrence 910's in his Zum.

FWIW - Hal helped to get the 910 released on the market.
(The 910 has one row of pole pieces in the middle - with 2 coils on their side under the cover. Hence the name - "The Sidewinder")

Hal and Bill were very close friends.

My best to all,
Kurt

NOt sure if this information helps. I saw Hal about two months before he passed in Tucson. He told me that the guitar in the picture was at his residence in Nashville. The beautiful lacquer Zum that he played his last time in Dallas was in Arizona. I am not sure what happened to either one of them after he passed away.

I don't believe his daughter Tammy follows the forum or maintains any interest in Hal's stuff. Could be wrong however.

So do I Tommy.. We once figured that we had done around 1000 sessions together in Nashville back in the 70's. The guy never had a cross word, always had that great smile and a twinkle in his eye. And of course what came out of that guitar WOW!!!!

I sat down yesterday and watched Hal Rugg and Buddy Emmons on the Bell Cove video. I just still can hardly believe he is no longer with us. Hal was just a great player and that country sound just sends chills down my spine.

This is the steel Hal played in 2004 at the ISGC. Hal got it in 2003. It`s red laquer with black trim. A beautiful steel.
I sure miss Hal and his wonderful personality.

Found the pic at the Carter website.

I may be wrong, but I believe this guitar had Jerry Wallace True Tone single coil pickups in it. The reason I remember is I was trying to decide what pickups to get in my new Zum at the time, and Hal's tone with that guitar influenced me. I think the mica Zum had the Lawrence 910's in it.

Like everyone else, I miss him. The shows aren't the same without him.

Randy...you are correct about the True Tones in that guitar. I also asked him about that, based on the tone he had. That's one of the reasons I have them in mine now.

I think I don't have to say how much I miss Hal because I think everyone knows we were pals. BUT I will say it anyway
"I MISS YOU PAL"!!!. As for the guitar, I think Randy is right about the True Tones. I have been helping Tammy, Hal's daughter, inventory his equipment. She will probally let me post the list soon. There are 3 guitars and a Pedabro in the mix.
Thanks,
Larry

Bob, Thanks for letting us all here Hal's playing. I do have to tell you it brought tears to my eyes. Hal always played so great and gave the tunes he played a little different twist. I will always remember his great talent, his humor, his love for music and friends, and that big Hal Rugg smile. I too loved him and miss him so much. Bobby

I'm with you folks, Hal was great. Besides the fact that I loved his playing he was just a super guy to be around. One night in the early 80s, backstage at the Opry he gave me a compliment that just meant so much to me. To this day I remember that fondly and it still makes me feel great whenever I do. That was Hal, his music and good nature were so lasting and wonderful.

Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson

a few years back i ordered "Altered Ego" from Hal on a CD and it sounds really great. I think he recorded that album around 1977 and the new sounds of effects processors and what have you were in full swing. My favorite on the CD is Send In The Clowns just Hal a synthesizer and drums. If oyu haven't heard this album, his family might be able to get one for you. He gets some sounds that are pretty far removed from conventional steel sounds. TJH
