Wade Ray's steel man was Eddie Martin. The last time I heard him he was with Wade at the Red Flame on South Vermont. A great stand up player. He played one of the first Fender quads.

In 1949 Wade Ray recorded for Red Redfern's Cowtown label, the resulting 78 rpm six song release featured Wade's group with Bob Morgan (bass), Dick Morgan (guitar), Jimmy Madrid (drums) and Freddie Tavares (steel).
He then moved to Capitol Records before signing with RCA Records in 1951.
The abover line-up was the band at the Cowtown in 1949, a gig they shared with a especially downsized version of Hank Penny's band, although Penny used his full band at his Ballroom gig.

The Morgan brothers worked with a variety of bandleaders, I think another Morgan later joined Wade, and I guess most folks know their sis Jayne P. Morgan from her stint on the gong show, although she was part of Hank Penny's band in the early 1950s.

Jerry, I was planning to ask that very question. Yes, I remember Dick well. No finger picks and a stand up triple neck Finder. What a great player. I played many times with him at Ollie’s/ Oakieville in Fontana, Grans in Redlands, and a few more that I can't remember. I heard he died some time ago.

Hey Chuck Campbell, when did you play at Ollie’s/ Oakieville and who were you playing with. I worked that honky tonk quiet a bit back in the very early 60's with a guy named Steve Johnson. The last I heard of Ollie, he sold out and left for Mexico with his waitress.

I mean come on Stu, did you have to remind me of Duke Davis?!!!!!!!

I'll catch y'all up in another post later on but I did want to make my first post here.

How about Chuck Gillette who played in the bay area 50's/60s? He played a Cherry Bigsby Triple neck. I remember he backed up Webb Pierce a couple times and played with Merle Travis a bit.

Speaking of Duke Davis...I think I have the honor of being the first player he fired in L.A.! I was too smart and uppity for an arrogant jerk like him; I got our band hired at the Cowboy Boogie, and after our first night, he let me go. So I stole our great lead player, Frank Michels, and started up Elvis Montana, and the rest is history. Small history, but history.

Steve Silver, howdy! Whatcha you doing these days? Last I heard you were in tech sales or something like that. You picking these days?

The Swizzle Stick was in Garden Grove, I think. I played there a few months with one of my fave lead men, Darryl Brooks. Then I gave up full time gigs and got my graphic design BFA.

Hey Roy, I was there in the 60’s. It was my favorite hang out. I remember the after hours jam sessions. No matter where I was playin on Friday night, I would go to Ollie’s and hang out and play all night till the next afternoon then go home just in time to clean up and go to the next gig. Then on Saturday the same. Those were the best of times. I don’t remember many of the names, but Dick Stubbs and JD were there probably as much as I was. JD and I both played Fender 400’s at that time. I also played some bass; I do remember a waitress named Wanda. I wonder if she was the one that ran off to Mexico.

John & Skip, the Swizzle Stik was in Huntington Beach in a shopping center on the corner of Brookhurst and Garfield. I played there in the late sixties with Johnny McKnight and in the early seventies with Bobby Ray & drummer Buddy Banks and the later seventies with The Country Stars which consisted of myself on lead, JoAnn Rinard on vocals, and Monte Paul on drums. We had three different bass players in this stint, Rod Culpepper, Bobby Ray, & Vern Costner. During this last stint we also had these steel players. (1) Art Sanchez (2) Al Meyers (3) Jimmy Hill (4) Steve Silver and last but not least (5) Me! When I went over to steel we brought in Roy Dee (DiSimone) on lead guitar.

Skip, the place in of note in Stanton was Shire's. The Firefly was also in Stanton but Shire's was the big place.....JH in Va.

Ok, if anyone knows this, Hayes does....

What was the name of the after hours place up in Santa Fe Springs, on the corner of....oh never mind, it was the Imerial Inn right? Did anyone else ever play there? Mostly I recall plaing there with Rod Culpepper and Butch Hendrix, which perhaps constitute the best two singers I ever had the pleasure of working with. It was a study of the history of country music, from the 30's to the 70's with little left untouched. We never rehearsed, and between the two of them they figured they knew over 2500 songs. A great exercise in ear training. (oh, and I played with them at the Swizzle Stik as well)

I haven't seen a couple of places mentioned...Dodge City Saloon (or just Dodge Saloon) where I spent a considerable amount of time playing with Ray (guitar) Tommy (bass), Duane (drums), and Danny (piano) all last names forgotten. How about The Cowboy (mostly played there with Sideways Jr and Leaky Canoe). Crazy Horse Saloon? I am certain a few others will come to mind.
Brandin, if you're reading, what was the name of a few of the places in Newport area that come to mind from the 70's? All I can think of is Cafe Metro.

The Blue Fox in Redondo Beach? I used to go play the afterhours on steel with a guitar player named Dale (can't remember his last name) who had dark hair and a goatee plus an oriental girl friend. He was a pretty good picker and played a sunburst 335. This would be around '72-73. The Imperial Inn? One hell of an after hours place. Most of the time Al Bruno was the man on guitar and every Fri. & Sat. night there'd be lead players there trying to cop some of his licks. I took my steel there a couple of times but mostly sat in on guitar. There used to be another after hours at the Aces Club in the City of Industry and another in Santa Ana at the Time Out.

Anyone remember the late Harry Hess who was a Forumite util his untimely demise from sleep apnea? I first met Harry when Steve Silver and I were in the house band at the Swizzle Stik. Harry came in the side door one Sunday night to our jam session carrying an old brown ShoBud. He'd just hit town from Austin, Texas and sat in a little that night.......JH in Va.

Steve, welcome to the forum.
The two places in Newport Beach were
Isadore's, and the Cafe Metro. I worked
at both clubs with the Phanton Herd. My
old friend Alan Hammel had a band and
used alot of different steel players
like, Kevin Quick, Dana Keller, the late
Herry Hess, and the man who doesn't feel
the cold, Stu Schulman. Gary Morse played
in Jimmy Reed's (not that Jimmy Reed)band,
which was the last time anyone saw Gary with
a full head of hair.

Hey Jerry, I also worked a few nights at the Blue Fox, gosh I had forgotten about that place.A friend of mine big Jim Miller had the job and I helped him out a little, also, Al Bruno, Archie Francis, Clyde Griffen and my self started our part of that weekend all nite jam in 67or68 and I was there until 70 when I left for Ok. We had so many great pickers stop by. Conway,Clarance White and others to drop a name or two. Sammy Masters band did the regular nite thing and we did the after hours. You guys sure make some good memories for this old man. I sure enjoy you're inputs. By the way Jerry, I talked to Eddy Drake the other day and he said to tell you hi. He has no puter but we call each other every now and then. db

I forgot to say it was the Imperial Inn Al Bruno and us did the jam. By the way I wonder if anyone can help me out on a steel player that worked with me at Georges Roundup#2, his first name was Tommy I want to say Johnson but I don't think thats right. It was in the early 60's. He loved Little Jimmy Dicken and always had me to the song (House is not a home). Man he played that so well. After he left thats when Carl West and Cecil Bays came with me. db

Nice to see JB Crabtree mentioned. I went to high school with him, and remember the days when he played dobro for the Sweethearts of the Rodeo at Straw Hat Pizza in Manhattan Beach! We used to jam periodically at Strand parties (I was playing guitar then) and were both part of th gang hanging out at Gene Leis Guitars. Lost touch about 10 years ago...I was very saddened to learn of his passing. Great guy - I think I still have a vinyl LP by "Jimmy Discount" with JB playing steel.

Dave Z,

I have that record at my house. I'll try to copy it for you or I'll just let you take it and listen to it.

See ya friday,

I'll have my bassman with me since I have to be at that moose lodge thing before the san Rafael show. I'll bring it in in case you want to try it. I don't want to leave it in the car anyway.

Mike Brewer, sorry it took me so long to reply. I asked Jack Kondora if Roy Counts was at the Bob Wills tribute in Mt. View Arkansas. Jack doesn't know Roy. I thought he would be there if he is still kickin.
When I worked Georges Roundup, Roy played lead and fiddle. Bob Wills did a show nearby. Roy said "I'm taking off tomorrow night. They can fire me if they want to, but I'm going to see the old man".
I haven't heard anything about Roy since I left the Roundup in 1962. Helen Price and Jimmy Pierce live in the Nashville area now. Norm Owens died in 1999, Roy Nichols died in 2001. Wynn Stewart died in ???. Dale Norris lives in Carthage, Missouri. Cecil Bays lives in Tome, New Mexico. Frank Arnett lives in Greenbrier, Tennessee. I don't know what happened to Bobby Austin. Dale Bennett,of course, replied to this post.
FYI, if you hear anything about me from the west coast days, it would be under my stage name from those days, "Johnny Dee".

I'm trying to remember the name of a really fine player in the Oxnard, Ventura area around 1970 or so. He was an American Indian and played a Gibson Console. I believe it was a tripple neck. I played lead guitar with him on several jobs. He went by the name of "Chief" something or other. Wow what memories this thread has brought back, thanks. ah
