A Gibson RB-75 and an RB-250. When you play for spite, a banjo is the ultimate weapon.

I'm probably more of a banjo owner than a banjo player. My repertoire on the instrument is quite limited, but I find quite some fun in doing things like "Tiny Broken Heart" in tempo 180

BTW it's a 5 string G-open.

Well, I have to add my two-bits worth. E. Blackburn, thank you for allowing me to see the plink, plink, plink of this so-called instrument. Back then it was known as mountain music and then it's changed to Bluegrass music and it's still the same. You can put all the lipstick on it you want but a pig is still a pig. Thank You. Yep you heard it here.

Check out this psuedo scientific study.. I quote

"The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), BANJO, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and “elevator” music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commericals and elevator music."

-so banjo is up there amongst everyones least favorite instruments, just above accordian and bagpipes..haha. Notice the most unwanted lyrics are about cowboys and holidays. I was surprised to hear people dont want lyrics about cowboys, but maybe they meant the football team?

You're better than me, Richard B.!

Would people like the banjo better if it used a dobro-type resonator instead of a drumhead?

Banjo Bash '96
I may have to start agreeing with Bobby Lee - this sounds like a flock of musical chickens (and a tuba)

Then again, what would that many steels sound like?

As a California tradition, we often end steel jams with everyone playing "Together Again" together. You haven't lived until you've heard that!

In space, no-one can hear you play the banjo.

On the other hand, if they broadcast it through the built-in headphones in the space suit you have no option but to listen, since you can't take your helmet off !

That is too funny Steve.. if a banjo is played on the moon, in a vacumn and no one hears it, is it still too loud?

Hey guys, sorry about the repetitive opinions about the banjo, can't seem to get the computer to delete two them. Us older folks aren't whizzes on these things so you'll have to bear with us. Thanks Bob for sticking up for us steel players. If you play banjo, good for you, I applaud your determination to learn another instrument. However a banjo remains an instrument that belongs in bluegrass music period. If you want to include that into country music for whatever reason you choose to, be my guest. However a banjo is an instrument of stuff and you can spell stuff anyway you want. Thank You.

Banjos don't cost as much as steel pedals do. I had a dream that I died and went to heaven, and they don't play the harp in heaven...they play the banjo. The reason I knew I was in heaven was because it was in tune!
Everyone knows I play the banjo cause I took a lot of slack about it when I played it for 22 seconds at the ISGC last year in 2005. But there was one older lady in Ohio who said she really liked it.
But I do have banjo (5-string) on all my CDs...maybe that's why they don't sell good??
Corn fused...but I've only lost 6 teeth so far so I still have 2 left!
You sure got a purty mouff,

Perhaps the "slack" took place in the Fender Room? Fender had a banjo on display in their room, you should have seen the memorable looks my buddy and I got while we test drove that banjo....for 45 minutes.... I played a few steel licks too and still got looks. Maybe said lookers were experiencing a blockage, not enough fiber from the previous day intake?

Now, I don't play banjo, but do any of you remember several moons ago, Harold Morrison in Nashville, played PSG, dobro and banjo, all on the TV even. Worked the Wilburn Brothers show a long time, played PSG on the road with Johnny Wright and Kitty Wells for 2-3 years or so, and did a few cuts on a Chet Atkins album...don't remember if he was PSG or dobro on those cuts. Was proficient on all 3 instruments, and a funny man, too...Lost track of Harold a long time ago.....just wondered....

Duane,
Dem cats be smokin'. Some people might not like it, but I don't see how anybody could say it's not good music.

Chris,
Ever hear the Sacramento Banjo Band? It was around in the 60s when I lived in Sack o' tomato, and I think they are still there.

Any Ode freaks? I have two 5-strings, one 6-string, and one 12-string. I just heard bOb retching.
