I bet you could plop down in Austin and play steel on Wilco/Radiohead ambient pop or Indie rock stuff pretty much 3-4 nights a week... But you'd be lucky if it pays your parking fees, let alone room and board! So demand: yes, a wage to support ongoing work: not so much. ...not to sound cranky or anything!

Come on guys, we have to get real about this.

When you were young, say in your late teens and you wanted to play "your" music with the guys, how many of you could afford to drop a thousand bucks on a "used" guitar?

I love the steel guitar; however, when I mention to any young person how much even a used pedal steel costs, they role their eyes and snicker.

Things have not changed much. A young guy or girl whe is just starting out just plain does not want to buy something that will all but wipe them out financially.

If your eighteen year old son came up to you and said, "Hey pop, can you loan me a grand or two so I can buy a steel to go and jam with Tom and Harry next door?"

After you stopped laughing, you would probably take him to the store and buy a nice electric guitar for $300.00.

We wonder why there are not more young steel guitar players showing up?

Les, "the good old days ain't what they used to be"! I see a lot of teenagers driving around today in newer cars than I own, and they install a $2,000 sound system to make it "thump". They put $5,000 worth of 22" wheels and tires on older cars. They have cel-phones (with all the add-ons) that run $200 a month. They regularly run up hundreds of dollars a year on ring-tone and I-Pod download charges, and their latest Playstation computer game runs $600...and then they'll spend another $500-$1,000 on extra games. They wear $200 tennis shoes, $500 Gucci watches, $75 sweatshirts, $200 jackets, and also spend a few hundred every now and then on tatoos, ear studs, and a ltttle smoke.

Yep, time was when two or three grand was a real big lay-out for a kid (teenager). Nowadays, though, it's chump change - when Mom and Dad are pullin' down well over $100,000 a year.

It's just a question of priorities for the kids and their parents. Most parents go out on a limb today so they won't alienate their offspring. (It's the American way.)

I have to agree with Donnie on this.My god children have all the above. And their parents are lower middle class at best.

We're just regular middle-class folks. Our oldest son, when he was 17, spent $1600 of his OWN money - saved from Christmas, birthdays, mowing lawns, washing cars...and bought a brand new Les Paul. I was so proud of him for doing that I bought him a medium-grade Marshall head used and loaned him a cab.

He's 24 now, and has that Les Paul, a Jackson, A U.S. PBass, A Protools setup on an Ibook, $2,000 drum set, amps, worked his way through MI's recording technology certificate program...

If you want it you will find a way.

"They have cel-phones (with all the add-ons) that run $200 a month"

We're on an unlimited family plan with all the options and 5 phones for $179/mo. I think you're exaggerating JUST a little bit, Donny...
