Maybe this should be in computers instead of recording. As long as recoding is done with computer mostley now, they should be in the save category. b0b!!

I plug in my mike and try record or talk on chat room. Volume controls are on and OK. But when I plug in a mike or mixer, it won't recognize the hardware. Says go to Control and add the hardware from a list. Nothing on it for mike or mixer.???stumped..al

Hi Al, ok, I'll give it a try. First make sure your plugged into the correct input for the mic, then, go to start/control panel/sounds and devices/and click on the "voice" tab. Now, under "voice recording" click on "volume" and make sure the microphone box is selected. Hope this works.

Along with what has been suggested, it sounds like the sound card (or integrated on the motherboard audio) has not been fully installed or installed correctly.

More info on what sound module you have and also what brand of PC would help. e.g. with the later Dell's, if you do a complete reinstall the Dell chipset drivers must be installed before installing device drivers such as the sound.

BTW, this is a PC isssue not a "recording" issue.

Jack-Andy-Thanks ,I have a new HP 2006 xp media center edition, with Whatever the sound card that came with it. I plug the mike or inst in the fron mike in or line in. The system just wont recognize it.I had it since april but never used it for recording yet. Everything else works fine, music, cd's download music, so it seems the sound card is fine.
I may have to contact HP or Best Buy to have it fixed. It looks like a problem for them...al

In case this isn't taken care of...
Run "sndvol32". select "Options", "Properties", and hit the "Recording" radio button. Make sure "Line In" and "Microphone" are checked...

Click "OK" and it will revert to the window with the recording slider controls.

To get back to the playback sliders, do the drill again and select the playback radio button.

Ray-I went in there as you said and found the line in and mic and made sure they weren't checked as Muted and unchecked them.I don't know how they got that way.. They were checked.

Now I will have to see if a line in or mic will work, if I had a recording program. I lost a lot when I had to do a Recovery last moneh..thanks for the help, we'll see now..al .
