Can anyone tell me who played steel on most of Wandas recordings? And is she still alive & well? I think she was one of the best. Her career was to short!

Wanda is alive and well and living in Ok City. She still tours some and does mostly gospel music at which she is very good. Wanda and I attended the same high school together. Norma Jean of Porter Wagner fame was 1 year behind us at the same school.
As far as who played steel on most of her recordings, I realy don't know. I know it wasn't me.

I just obtained one of Wanda's old albums a couple of weeks ago, on Capitol Records, "Reckless Love Affair" which I believe was released around 1967. It sounds like Ralph Mooney on several of the cuts and also Hal Rugg on a few of them. I recognize Hal's playing on there because there are several licks from his work with Loretta Lynn on Wanda's album. Jason

Wanda's career is all but over! Although she doesn't tour extensively, she does quite a lot of shows both here in Europe and US, in which she plays mostly her old material; rockabilly and country, depending on the show. I've played lead guitar for her twice here in Finland, and she still rocks harder than most of the younger ones. She has also done some recent recordings, and there is an annual Wanda Jackson birthday party at the Continental Club in Austin ( coming again soon in October ), starring of course Wanda herself, and usually some local Austin talents ( check this year Marti Brom, she's like young Wanda/Patsy Cline/Eartha Kitt all rolled into one ).
And yes, it's Ralph Mooney on those early Capitols.

Neil! In 58 I played a show at Medina Ballroom, with Wanda Jackson, Norma Jean, Bobby Lord, Marvin Rainwater, & The great Jimmy Colvard, who was leader on that show at age 15, I have pictures of that & I was playing my #3 Sho-Bud, Hows that for Small world? au

Thanks for the info Al! As you know I'm also a HUGE Sho-Bud FAN & collector. In fact in the mid 60's when I got my first "BUD", you were a distributor for them here in southern Minnesota. About that same era, my wife & kids and myself were on our way back from vacation in St Louis. We stopped for gas at a truckstop in Missouri along the freeway about 2am. They had Wanda Jackson cranked WAY-UP on the outdoor speakers, "In the middle of a Heartach" WOW it was so awsome, we sat there in the car & listened to the whole Album! And Al, don't be so stingy with your e-mail!
Thanks, to all!
Neil
