YES!! Real, honest-to-goodness western swing - played by a group who have schooled themselves well in the genre.

I had the honor to fill in for the wonderful Herb Remington this past Saturday with this group called the Wild River Band that plays here in the Houston area.. EXCELLENT players and great material from start to finish...I think I played E9 on 3 tunes all night.

This was NOT your average top 40 cover group playing watered down, versions of S.A. Rose and Faded Love...these were true swing players, and material - it was a steel players dream gig!

If anyone is in the area on Sunday the 26th of Sept. I'll be with them again at Bill Mraz Dance hall in Houston, TX. 3 -7 PM. Please drop in and say "hi" and enjoy the real thing.

Excellent, Jody. Play well, dude.

Wow, Bill Mraz Hall. One of the classic Houston venues, along with Tin Hall, Dancetown, the Esquire Ballroom, the Winchester, et al.

Bill Mraz is the right place for western swing, you bet.

Tom, there's a map on this website:
http://billmrazdancehall.150m.com/map.html

It's off West 34th in Houston.

Herb, thanks...yep Bill Mraz Hall has been around since 1948. He used to have his own orchestra as well...they really have a cool website with lots of nastalgic photos and history.

Thanks Jody, for the info.

I live about 2 miles from the Esquirer Ballroom...or should I say defunct Esquirer. The last inhabitants, a few years ago, renamed it "Spanish Rock" Ballroom. That lasted about three months...it's now a decaying relic. Sorry Herb!

Growing up in Houston, I remember seeing the Winchester Club on Bissonnet near Chimney Rock. I used to go to a day-care place that, as I recall, was in a big old house on a street behind the club. There used to be an Army Surplus store at the corner of Bissonnet and Chimney Rock called Southern Sales, back when you really could buy surplus rifles, bayonets, etc.

Anyway, the point is, in doing a web search for any info on the Winchester I came across this site:

SSQQ Dance Studio

Anyone in Houston interested in Western dance (or any type of dance) should check this place out!
