Just got back from the first Meeting/Jam of the new Gulf Coast Steel Guitar Club.
The club is being organized by Tom Murphy, Clyde Wiggins, and Chuck Parrish and will meet the Third Tuesday of the month at the Eagles Club in Bradenton, just north of Sarasota.
There were about 10 steel players and an audience of approximately 50 people there tonight.
Several players from that area are members of the Florida Steel Guitar Club which meets at Catfish Johnny's at Lake Panasoffkee.
But it is a 2 and a half drive from Sarasota,so the new club will serve those who have been unable to make the long trip.
It is really nice to now have two steel guitar clubs on the West Coast of Florida.
Lots of fun, lots of good pickin'.

Blake,
Sounds like a great time you had, and that you guys are off to a terrific start of another great Steel Guitar Club. Looking forward to visiting this new venture sometime. Good Luck, Nick

This should be a big help for the guys to the south that can't or don't want to make the trip to Lake Panasoffkee. I hope it succeeds.

I do have a problem with the club name, since my first CD (came out in 2000) is titled "Gulf Coast Steel Guitar" and my web site, started in 1998 is titled "Gulf Coast Steel Guitar" and is listed on the Forum as "Gulf Coast Steel Guitar".

Hey, Blake. Does this mean we will lose Bud VanDerberg at our Panasoffkee club? (I think he lives in Bradenton -- just a stone's throw from Sarasota.) If Bud abandons us we will just have to "whup up" on him.

Roy,
Bud is indeed a part of the new club.
The meeting place is very convenient to where he lives.
I hope we don't loose him completely.

Also I got the name of the club wrong.
The correct name is "Manasota Steel Guitar Club."
See my separate thread.

Jack,

I notice that your signature says "There is no such thing as too many steels." It reminds me of something that I heard many years ago. During the 15 years that I was in Louisville, Kentucky I knew a jazz drummer named "Bones" Lee. Bones literally hated country music, and especially steel guitar. He once said that his lifetime ambition was to put all of the steel guitar players in the world out in the middle of Parkway Field (a stadum there) and have them all turn their amps wide open and all play "Steel Guitar Rag" at the same time. Later, we had a dance gig booked near Louisville and our regular drummer was ill, so Pee Wee King hired Bones for the gig. We opened with "Farewell Blues" and when it came time for my chorus, I played a chorus using all 8 strings with a fast strumming type lick -- the type that Joaquin used to call the "whip-chord" style. When the song ended, Bones looked down at me and said, "G-- D-----, that thing would put a whole brass section out of work." I got a charge out of his sudden attitude reversal regarding steel guitars.

Bud...glad to see you'll be a member of both clubs as will I.

Jack,
Yes, bring your guitar and plan to play.
Their format is for each steeler to play a set of about 5 songs.
