On Friday, January 20 there will be a tribute to the steel guitarists of the great Hank Thompson Brazos Valley Boys bands both on FM in Connecticut and streaming on your computer world wide from 1:00-4:00PM- Eastern. There will be a tribute set to each of the steel players from the halcyon years of the great Thompson band. Featured will be Lefty Nason, Dusty Stewart, Curly Chalker, Pee Wee Whitewing, Bob White, Bobby Garrett and Bert Rivera. It can be accessed right from the home page of "Swingin' West" www.swinginwest.com with either Windows Media Player or Quick Time.

Not sure if he recorded with Hankt T., but when I saw the band in Billings, MT (1974), he had "Big Murph" Jim Murphy play steel for him. Nice show!

Dave,

Hank had many great steel players including Big Jim after the "Big Band" was broken up in the early 1970s. Actually, he has a wonderful steel player in the current Brazos Valley Boys with the great J.D. Walters. I sure wish that I could fit all of them in on this show but I stopped with Bert Rivera in the early 70s. I did a tribute to Big Jim on last Friday's show. I sure do hope that you caught it.

Thanks again!

Tune in today to one of the best friends the steel guitar players have on the radio waves.
Give Mike Gross a listen to on www.swinginwest.com or WVOF 88.5FM in the Conn. listening area between 1-4 EST.

I don't know if Lefty Nason was Hank's first steel guitarist or not, but he gave Hank a signature lick that is heard several times in the tune "Greenlight".

I believe Bob White had the longest tenure with Hank. From 1953 to about 1960.

Roger,

Lefty wasn't Hank's first steel player but as you say he started that Thompson sound on "Humpty Dumpty Heart" and "Green Light"

Thanks for your interest

Dang - that's 2 weeks in a row I wasn't able to listen.
I'm going to be tuning in this coming Friday if I have to handcuff myself to the computer . .

Mike, you're the best - thanks for playing my music on your great show!

I am not familiar with Dave's recordings with Hank Thompson but I know that he toured with Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys. This band included Tony Ramsey on drums. When Tony recorded his wonderful album, that I love to play on my show, he chose Dave to play steel. Dave also did some great steel work for Dave Stallings' Delta label in the early 1980s on some fine recordings including the Texas BS Band.

Ted,

Thanks so very much for your interest in "Swingin' West." My Friday live shows from which the Hank Thompson steel salute was streaming originates from WVOF-FM in Fairfield, CT and are only heard live on FM and the Internet live at that time. I do have an archived show on the Internet but that is from www.twangtownusa.com and is not the Hank Thompson salute. I am sure that there are many listeners that do record the shows and perhaps one will come forward but I don't know of any specificaly at this point.
