I saw a odd steel last night at a concert. A Bennet. Never heard of it. It was an underpowered 2 and 1. Looked like a mica PP Emmons sort of.Anyone know of this unit? I didn't get to hear it played either, but the guy was sitting with it in the group promo photos so I guess it is a large part of the sound for much of the set. I was too late to see the whole set. A band called Homelife, a huge group and very tight, what I did hear. There was an asian woman singing and also through some sort of synthisiser as a lead instrument too. Awesome voice with and with out the effects |

These were/are(?) made by Ronnie Bennett. He used to play steel for the Hillsiders, a Liverpool-based UK band, and he made a fair number of them.I didn't ever play one myself, but Ronnie 'saved my life' one night when I was playing at the Liverpool Empire with George Hamilton IV - my Sho-bud broke yet another one of those die-cast 'elbows' on my LKL, and he came to the rescue, fixing up my guitar in time for the show with a duplicate he'd made in proper steel. It never broke again! He was maybe the best-known UK 'steel tech'... ------------------ Roger Rettig [This message was edited by Roger Rettig on 03 August 2003 at 06:43 AM.]

Think he still is - I'm sure I spotted him, and another British builder Dave Wiggins, at this year's British Steel festival.... |

A friend of mine has one, a loaded D-10 with eight knee levers or so. Four raise and four lower and seven hole bellcranks. It looks a bit like a ShoBud Super Pro, but they make several different models also with wooden necks. Plays very easy and precise, Bennett manufactures everything himself using computer technology. The undercarriage on that particular guitar looked a bit cluttered, the way the pull rods are fastened to the bellcranks takes up a lot of space (using those metal barrels like on the old Emmons) Otherwise, it´s a real nice modern guitar.Regards, Joe H. |

I played one of Dave Wiggins' steels in the band room at Gerry's festival in May - fortunately it happened to be set up 'Day', so I could play it - and I thought it was very nice! Russ played it, and I got the impression he approved of it, too, which might carry a bit more weight here on the Forum.... ------------------ Roger Rettig [This message was edited by Roger Rettig on 03 August 2003 at 03:58 PM.]
