I've posted this question before, but many new pickup brands and various brand models of pickups have been produced since then. I purchased this guitar new in 76. It's lacquered birdseye maple body and neck. The pickup mounts into an aluminum neck tailpiece The guitar is in great shape and pedal action is ultra smooth. I want to update the pickup at this point. Also contemplating removing the changer and giving it a thorough cleaning...after I jot down the rod placements. Any input is appreciated. Thanks Dennis |

Dennis- I have a MSA "Universal" about 1983 model. After I tweaked my amp, got a great sound out of it, like the old Sho-bud sounds.I have a Super-Sustain II original pickup in it. If you have a plain earlier super sustain, then you can update to the II, if you can find one. I feel like I am getting a lot of sustain and good string seperation. Good luck...al ------------------ My Website..... www.cmedic.net/~almarcus/

In every discussion about pickups sooner or later Jerry Wallace and his True Tones comes up, so here it is: how about Jerry Wallace's True Tones? I've never tried them, but everybody seems to like them, and i'm actually thinking about putting a pair on my MSA Classic SS. I have E-66's on it now and they don't sound bad, but i guess i just like the clearity of single coils pickups better.Uffe |

Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention it is a U-12 7+6. It originally came with a super sustain pickup. I replace it with a super sustain 2 pickup about a year later. The super sustain 2 cleaned up the murky tone a little, but I think it could still be a little brighter with a new pickup. I bought a new U-12 Zum in 83 and eventually replaced the stock pickup with a 12-1 GeorgeL which gave it greater string seperation and a cleaner and fatter bottom end. I like the humbucker for it's quietness also. I think the fatness of the 12-1 would be too deep for the MSA?? There are too many choices available now More ideas? Thanks Dennis |

Dennis, I bought a MSA Classic 1972 model from a friend who could no longer play. He had mounted one of Jerry Wallace's TruTone pickups and the tone of the guitar is truly astounding when played thru a good amplifier. I was so impressed that I contacted Jerry and MSA and they fitted one of Jerry's Trutones to my new Millennium insert. The string separation is tremendous, and tone to the bone...Even tho it is a single wound pickup, you can't hear but just a whisper of hum with the volume turned fully CW on my Session 500 and that's a lot of power... Price was right, Jerry is straight, and will make good on his word. That's my nickel's worth. FRED

My Classic D10 sounded so much better when I replaced the Super Sustain II pickups with the L710's. I found the SuperSustain II pickups to sound rather muddy. |

I have a 1976 MSA S-10 Classic.I originally changed out the Supersustain to an E-66. The E-66's have enjoyed a good reputation in regard to old MSA's. Not too long ago I switched to a Wallace True Tone. In my mind the True Tone is a big improvement. I've only played Lawrence 710's in other guitars, so I can't speak directly about how they work in an MSA. There was a fairly recent thread that asked which humbucker sounded closest to the True Tone, and the 710 seemed to score high in this regard. The True Tone is reported to be a little sweeter than the 710. I'm very happy with the True Tone, and wouldn't contemplate switching. As far as describing the sound, myself and others have done that pretty thoroughly of late. They're great. |

I switched from a super sustain II to a GL 10-1 & was happy. How ever on my other steels I have tried E-66, Truetones,BL-710 & L XR-16. You will be very happy with the L XR-16. & that's what I would go with. [This message was edited by autry andress on 25 August 2003 at 03:34 PM.] |

Mike, do you know the resistance/impedence of each of the two positions you're using? Thanks Dennis |
