If you are going to pick the strings in the order 4 6 5 4 2 6 5 2 which fingers of the right hand go to each string?
I have it like this 4/middle 6/thumb 5/index 4/middle and then I'm stuck as to get sring 2
How would you finger this and how are you doing the blocking for this lick.

Put a pick on your ring finger, Billy. Then you can pick block the whole pattern without moving your hand.

3 finger picks has its advantages, I haven't found a disadvantage yet.

With two finger picks, I'd pick that sequence like this:
Strings: 4 6 5 4 2 6 5 2
Picks: 2 T 1 T 2 T 1 2

For those of us who aren't interested in dealing with more than two fingerpicks, has anyone ever found a systematic approach for deciding picking sequences as they present themselves? Often there seems to be more than one way to proceed.

Thanks Jim Smith, That IS the solution I was looking for. I do use three finger picks but the ring finger is such an idiot I never was able to get it to do single notes just help out on the four note chords.
Thanks again, Bill W

To do it without being sloppy starting with the thumb cross EVERY note over alternating with the middle finger. Yes it ends with the thumb on string 2.

If this is an e9 run pedals up or down crossing over similarly and instead of the 2 string lower the 4th. Crossing the T and M over every time.

If it is a speed run where roll semi-blocked picking is ok, try it with T12 using the return of the 4th string lowered to begin the next run. This can be played about twice as fast as the correct cross over with the thumb ending on the 2.

Glad I never submitted to the temptation to put on that third pick.

As close as I've come lately is watching Gary Morse to the rapidly ascending and decending repeating four string run done in triplets, but the blocking is not totally clean. It can be done crossing over, and has been a kind of a "pet excersize". It takes hours a day to get some of that stuff "up to speed". Sometimes it takes years..

Lots of different styles.

That's for sure.
