I know I've read about 'Mothers' on the Forum, but Ace Hardware didn't have that brand. They did, however, have '3M Mag & Aluminum Polish' in a black plastic tub - will this be OK?

I won't open it until I get the 'OK' from you guys, but the end-plates on my 4-year old LeGrande are getting a bit ugly, so a quick response would be appreciated!

Thanks,

RR

I use Simichrome on my endplates now. I have used Mothers, and Never-Dull also with reasonable results.

I use Emmons' polish. I find it to be delightfully good. Since it is the only thing I have ever used, I cannot attest to the others. They may be better. But I don't know how.

Sounds like it should be fine. Try a dab on the part of the end plate that wraps around the back of the guitar and see how it looks.

Roger,
I have a tube of Simichrome around here somewhere (probably in a box)

I'll try to get by your place in the next week or so -- I'll EMail you -- and I'll try to remember to bring the Simichrome. It does the trick. Can be had at many army/navy surplus stores.

"Mothers" polish is available ,where else but, Wal Mart. I have used it, and it works okay.

Thanks, you guys - funnily enough, my Wal-Mart didn't have any 'Mothers', which is why I started a quest for an alternative.

This 3M stuff is for 'non-coated mag and aluminum wheels' - but no-one here seems to have used it, so I may return it and look harder for one of your recommendations.

Hi, Larry - look forward to seeing you before too long; welcome to humid ol' FL!

I've also found Mother's Mag Polish at Auto Zone if Wal Mart is sold out. Simichrome Polish can be ordered from Smoky Mountain Knifeworks, Kodak, Tennessee. I like to buff with Simichrome first. This will remove scratches & swirls. Then buff once again with Mother's for the final shine.
Then wash the black off your fingers before you touch something. Ha.

The Best stuff I have ever found is "Flitz". It not only shines, but has a corrosion Protection as well. It is available at some gun shops or sometimes at Walmart. Flitz is made in Germany and packaged in the USA by Flitz International, LTD, Waterford, WI 53185. It does the best job and is the easiest to use. If you can't find it, go on line and ask the factory where to find it.

In reference to the question about polish for aluminum, Mothers polish can be found at most well stocked auto parts stores like NAPA, AUTO ZONE, and ADVANCED AUTO PARTS.
Also, many gun stores carry a brand of pink paste polish made by a company called KLEEN BORE. It comes in a 1.5oz. tube that is black, orange , and pink. It is safe to use on aluminum, stainless steel, or even blued gun metal. I have been using these products for years on my steels and have had good success. Hope that this information helps you! Vann

Thanks to all of you for taking the trouble to reply to my query - I went back to Wal-Mart, and found that I'd been in the wrong aisle! The metal polishes weren't with the car polish products.

I got some 'Mothers', and also got some 'Nev-r-dull' - the latter was recommended by the builder of my next steel (JC )......

Now to try the big clean-up!

Every motorcycle shop in my area sells the Simi-chrome polish. I use it in my business as well as on steel. I like it a lot and think it's great.
