It not a steel guitar, but I thought someone might know something about a problem I am having with my 6-string Dano U2. The volume/tone knobs are tight together and don't move freely of one another. I have to hold the larger ring to turn the smaller inner one. Do these knobs come off somehow?
I don't want to break anything, and it doesn't seem to want to pull off.

My first thought, Stan, knowing nothing about the Dano specifically, is that you want a small jeweler's screwdriver--find a set screw in the side of the inner knob and loosen it. Now you can lift the knob a bit. My guess is that it has gotten jammed down on the shaft onto the outer knob and needs to be moved up a bit to regain free clearance.

Jon, doesn't appear to be any screws.

Bummer, Stan. I now defer to someone with a Dano. Sorry.

If there are no screws, the knobs pull off. If you can get a flat screwdriver under the large knob, use leverage to pry it off(take it easy and work your way around it if it is tight). The large knob will lift off both knobs. If this doesn't work, wrap a piece of cloth around the small knob and use pliers in a circular motion to pull it off. Of course you know to be careful not to break the knob or shaft.
If you get the knobs off, you may find that the shaft is bent, causing the inner knob to rub the outer knob. Be very careful when straightening the shafts. The metal is easily snapped.
I remove knobs almost daily and have never found one I can't remove. JD

Hello Stan

I have bought(and sold)14 Danelectro guitars over this past year. I still have a double neck (keeper)! The problem you have is generic to Danelectro's stacked volume/tone control. NONE that I had would allow free rotation of the individual wheel(knob). Some were looser than others, but none free-wheeling. These are very cheap controls. The only solution I know of is to replace them with a quality all metal stacked knob (this would include the pot). If you do, keep the old knob in case you want to sell the guitar later with original hardware.

Thanks Tom,
How do I remove the knobs?
Would a drop of oil between the knobs hurt anything?
Or perhaps graphite? I don't want to replace the knobs, but thought there might be an easy solution. Thanks for any suggestions.
