My aluminum necked S-10 bolt on (black) has a regular Emmons sticker for it's decal. I've just noticed a very similar guitar on e-bay with the screw-in plastic logo:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3738888668

Brad Sarno has posted pictures of his '66 and it has the sticker logo (his is almost purdier than mine): http://home.earthlink.net/~bradsarno/66photos.html

Is there any rhyme or reason this? Was there a particular time when a transition was made? I did a search and came up empty.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Lawrence, be very proud of that decal. Don't even think of replacing it with a screw on emblem. Just my opinion of course but I really would not recommend changing it out. When I see an old Emmons with the decal I get weak in the knees.

Thanks Jerry. Change it? Perish the thought! Just trying to learn a bit more about the different phases of production.

I think it was in '69 that the plaque was introduced. The decal looks good on black, but on rosewood, it's hard to read. I'm guessing that's why they switched. I've got a '69 push/pull with the sticker. It'll stay because it let's you know the vintage of the guitar.

The only reason I don't buy a push/pull is that I can't afford one with a sticker!

Lawrence,
I have (2) 1966 Emmons bolt-on P/P's. Both are black (now is there really any other color for a Emmons ). Both guitars have the decal and not the plaque. I must admit. . .I'm pretty darn FOND of them!

Okay, time to put on my Sherlock Holmes hat. If I am not mistaken, that ebay guitar is a bolt-on. Therefore it is a '66 or '67. It's got the plastic logo, not the sticker. Brad's theory is that the plaque was introduced around '69. Hmm...let me see if I can remember that logic class in high school...(if a=b and b=c, therefore a=c?)

Maybe I should have put my John Holmes hat on instead.

It's hard to imagine, knowing what we do now, but maybe someone thought it would be cool to 'update' the guitar by screwing the new logo on it!

I confess, Lawrence, that the same thought occurred to me when I saw the picture.

I've put the new chrome surround under the plastic plate on my LeGrande, but at least I can restore mine to 'original' in about thirty seconds!

Roger,
I also put the chrome surround on my Legrande II and I think it looks pretty sharp!

Re: the plastic logo plate on guitars that originally had the chevron decal, I understand that when a guitar was sent back to Emmons for refurbishing, adding levers, etc., the decal was replaced by the logo plate by the factory. I'm sure that in the 1970's, no one at Emmons thought the older guitars would be so collectable and their original appearance so desireable.

Ever notice that the adjective is "collectAble," but the noun is "collectIble?" I think about these things...

My '75 D-10 Emmons has a metal logo.
When were they changed to plastic?

Sometime in the 1970's . That's a question more for Jack Strayhorn or Bryan Adams.

There were originally black metal plates for black mica and brown metal plates for rosewood mica. I don't have any inside information, but I surmise a transition was made gradually as they ran out of metal plates and phased in the plastics.

Hey, Erv!

I agree! I actually think that the plastic logo without the new surround looks pretty shoddy and cheap, especially on such a good-looking instrument - that little extra embellishment makes all the difference.

It's all conjecture, but if the lettering on the old decal had been white instead of silver, maybe they'd still be using them...

How about a lacquer finish Emmons with a decal instead of the plastic nameplate? Now that would look sharp! Has anyone seen such a guitar?

Roger,
Have you ever thought about the chrome fretboards for your Emmons? I haven't bit the bullet in that department yet.

Bob, the decal is still available. I have one or two of them and Emmons stocks them.
