I use either Franklin or genric 11s. I get at least 80 hours of use out of them. Not sure, because I inevitably change them before they break.

Something is going on with that guitar.

Oh, I did have a problem with strings breaking at the tuner, it was some rough edges at the tuner. Just putting an additional foot or so of string at the tuner end solved that problem.

Hi Bob, It sounds like your problem is in the guitar and not the string brand. However, several years ago I received a bad dozen of .011's from a company that I won't mention, that broke while installing or within an hr. They sent me some from a different lot and they worked great. A few years back, I started using Frenchy,s Silent Series strings and I highly recommend them for tone brillience and longevity. Jody.

I have the same brand of Steel as Bob here..I clean and lube the rollers about every 3rd or 4th month if I remember..they are made of Aluminum as well. My Steel is probably 7 years old.

Now I do break strings..3rds and sometimes 5ths..but from excessive seat time with what I am practicing regularly.

The 5th maybe 1/month, the 3rd , not sure as I change it every week before the gig anyway..but if I forget it probably will break on the gig..I hate that when that happens..

Now last Friday before the gig, I went thru 3 .011's before I had one that hung in there..1 broke at the ball as soon as it was tuned to pitch..another broke at the peg and the third hung in there and is still on the guitar and still in tune after 2 gigs last weekend.

I suspect a few bad strings stuck in the batch of this well known brand..

I guess just keep the rollers clean and oiled, keep the bridge polished with semi chrome , be sure the Steel is not tuned above pitch..maybe try a few different strings..see what happens..

Aluminum, I doubt is the problem, true you may have to clean it every now and then, more than brass.. I've had 2 of this brand Steel, both D10's , same rollers , pretty much same eveything..with minimal maintenance I'm a happy camper..if a 3rd breaks on a gig I look at it as being my own fault for not putting a .50 string on the $3000 Steel before the gig..

I hope the new rollers give the expected results and solve the issue..

Be sure you are tuning to pitch and have not "drifted" up past 440. The tuner could be off or miscalibrated. No 3rd string can stand much more on any guitar.

I broke the first two .115's Jagwires I put on my steel. I replaced it with a "generic" .10 and broke it about a week later. I then put on another generic and it has lasted a couple of weeks. Who knows? I guess I'll just keep using what I have until I find what lasts.

really makes a person wonder,i've studied this trying to figure out why some guitars break so many, and some don't.my first professional i had built in 1970 never broke a string, course we didn't have tuners back then!just tune to a piano or pitch pipe,i had a new pro 11 built mid 70s,didn't even get it home hardly, broke a .038 tenth string,i played awhile, broke 3,5,6,and10 man was i hot!!i called sho-bud,they said try this, try that.well as long as i owned that guitar,it was a string breaker. now i have a professional,1970and a pro 3,hardly ever break a string.i've played in freezing cold weather,so hot till you bout burn up.just don't make no sence to me.i say,got to be something the way the guitar was built.mabe the radius of the puller, location of the pin or slot, way the rollers are made, and keys will cut, mabe even the action of the way the guitar is set up! I know it will drive a player insane,i got to where i wouldn't use a pedal unless i just had to,and that ain't no good.. good luck...... farris

It all depends on the amount of tension it takes to pull the string with the given pivot positions on the different manufactured fingers and the radius it's pulled on and how it's pulled.
You can see that in just those specifics; there are many factors involved from one model to the next.

I've owned sevaral brands over the years and the ball end to the slot or peg has always been lined up with the center of the changer. several years ago I bought a brand x right from the factory. The 1st night 2 thirds, 2 fifths, 1 tenth. 2nd night 2 thirds 1 fifth. I wasnt a very happy camper to say the least. I started checking things out and I discovered that the slots were offset 1 sixteenth from the center of the changer and I out of habit, just slid the ball end in the slot and automatically centered the string over the changer. Once I started offsetting the string to center of slot, this pretty well took care of the problem.

I have been using Jagwire's for over a year now and I haven't broken a string yet! I am using an 11 and a half on the third and play everyday and doing steel guitar shows around the country. You just can't go wrong with Jagwire-------
