Most steel players don't get into this discussion much.. I wonder if the reason SO many of us like the "old" steel sound better is because Alnico magnets were being used in the pickups back then.

I'm not sure,but maybe the pickups today are using ceramic magnet construction which has a bright CLEAR output as opposed to Alnico which have a warmer more "vintage tone...anyone know for certain??/ bob

No one knows what kind of magnets are used in pedal steel pickups??
