''Wow'' this kind of question is a loaded one to say the least . We all have an openion about the brand of guitar we play ,and thats ok with me . But let me just ask this question . Have you ever heard Mr . Mike Sigler play his G.F.I . ? Maybe if you did you would get a better idea of the sound of the G.F.I. How do they compare to other guitars ? I really don't know . But one thing i do know is that Mike makes his sound as big and good as any guitar on the market today . If you have the chance to hear Mike you will be doing yourself a favor by doing so . Thanks and best regards,,,Gary .

Ser# 0035.
I have played it every weekend for the last 5 yrs.It has never failed me it play's easy, and has a big sound.Records very good,I have Emmons guitars and i would just asoon play the GFI as i would the Emmons. Now this is not to say it sounds better or worst. But i like it and it is a keeper.
This is just my opion.

I own both. The Zum is a great guitar with wonderful sound and great mechanical action. You just can't beat the Zum. However, the GFI Ultra is a solid, stay in tune, and plays great guitar. And, it is lower in price than the Zum. It is also lighter than the Zum and this may be where the difference in the tone comes to play. I'm not going to get rid of either one. However, if it came down to a choice, the Zum would win.

I don't know anything about the Zum as I've never played one but as far as the GFI, that's GENE FIELDS INSTRUMENTS and I've known Gene for over 45 years or more. He's been associated with Fender, MCI, Sierra, and now GFI steels and he's never made a product anytime which wasn't the best out there. Gene's a great player/builder,inovator etc. and wouldn't put his name on any guitar if it wasn't as good or better than anything on the market. To top it all off, my hero (Ralph Mooney) plays a GFI and that's good enough for me...JH

For four years, I'd played an Emmons, but in December, I went and bought a new GFI Ultra D-10 from Bobbe at Steel Guitar Nashville. The GFI is the best steel guitar I've played. GFI steels sound incredible! Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

I had a S-10 and let me tell you it was first rate. Built well, sounded sweet, and was a very well thought out design IMHO.
Sold it to "see" what else was out there...
Would I own another? You bet I would!!!
I dont think you could go wrong with one.

As far as mechanical engineering goes, I'm sure the Zum would win hands down. Both are very stable and sought after guitars. I had the opportunity to speak with Gene at length a month or so back and he has applied the technology he has learned over his many years of experience to his guitars. The things he told me during our conversation make very good sense as to why his guitars sound so good. The bottom line is, I understand he has a lifetime warranty on his guitars and that should take care of any engineering failures, should they occur. My hat is off to Gene Fields.

I have Played everything comming and going over the last 25 years, and let me tell you, I Have Been with the GFI company now for TWO years and I can only say Gene And His Staff are second to none.. When you compare a guitar, we need not only to look at the guitar itself, but all that stands for the company.... Gene and his staff are always there anytime Day or Nite to make sure they are on top of all that the changing Steel Guitar world needs... As far as any other Brand, There are many good ones... But as far as TONE, Smooth Playing, Staying in Tune, and Weight... Not to mention, Many long years of perfect service.. GFI is by far the guitar For ME! for years to come...
Thanks For Reading my noval!

well the gfi looks like it is cheaply built. just as some of the other brands. the zum steel is a sharp looking steel and looks are impressive. i wouldn't own a gfi, mci, bmi etc cause they look cheap. and they are not the psg that zum is or some of the others as far as that goes. and if gfi is so grand how come bobby don't use one himself. on his tapes he uses a emmons. ha ha ha doc.

I think anyone who saw Buddy Charleton play his GFI at the NOVA show this weekend can you tell you Buddy & his GFI sounded fantastic!

I have a GFI D-10 Ultra. The lever & pedal action is smooth, it stays in tune, and has great tone.

It may be true that GFI's aren't built like tanks, hence they don't look as "expensive" as those that use more metal, but that has nothing to do with the tone. As a matter of fact, using materials wisely as opposed to just looks is a reason why many steelers use Gene's guitars -- they have superior tone, AND they're lighter. I've owned a Fields keyless LG style for six years -- it's a sleek, black, modern mother trucker, and has been the envy of many a musician who laid eyes on her.

I have a keyed, and keyless, and have been a GFI guy for going on 13yrs. They play great, sound great, and travel great.
The service I get from Gene and Bob cannot be matched.
Pound for pound GFI is as good a steel deal as there is.

I own and play both a Zum & GFI keyless and both are 12 string Uinversal.

They are both great guitars and have the own sonic and mechanical personality. One is not better than the other, just different. Pickups also make a difference in how the guitar sounds and responds.

Just my opinion.

I have owned a Marlen, MSA and Sierra guitars. It always seemed something wasn't right. Then I bought a GFI, the first time I sat down at the guitar it felt like it was custom made for me. Every thing about it was what I expected a very good steel to be. I have yet to play an Emmons, Zum etc., so it may change my mind if that ever happens. But for now I'm happy with what I have. Headless model (not Ultra) D-10 with 8 and 7. Sold all the other guitars never played them after the GFI was purchased.

I can say honestly, I have much better sustain on the GFI then i do on my Emmons LL-2.
And as far as staying in tune, Gene has nailed it! I Can tell you i worked with Holly Dunn in North Dakota, and we arrived early, the equipment was left under the bins in the bus in sub zero weather.
There were a couple of opening acts that were on before us, so this made it hard for us to setup our gear and tune, So i had the chance to setup my GFI about a 1/2 hour before the show, IT still had frost on it.. I played it and it stay right there in tune.

I really like the headless GFI. Tuning seems to be more precise at least to my ears. Changing string is easier and quicker.
How it effects the tone and sustain is hard to measure. I only know it sound great to me.

I think I remember reading that Gene has cabinet drop down to about...nothin'. There has to be "some" amount, but I don't notice it (honestly).

Let's face it -- it's just a miracle machine.

I'm being silly (or facetious) of course.

Like I said, I own a GFI, but I'd LOVE to ALSO own a Zum...and a Sho Bud...and an Emmons P/P...and one of those new Rains...a Carter...a Remington...

I'd truly like to have one of each. And is it a Russler that Butch has? All 200-frickin' pounds of it....I want it.

Charlie at Derby also claims the lowest cabinet drop in the industry.

i've read that a cabinet drop of about 2-3 cents is about at the industry best. i don't remember who said or quoted that?

i am going to place my order for my GFI on Friday or Monday. I think, i'll get a S-10 E9 DB with Pad, Golden Frame with Gately Oak Mica, 3+5, with Keys.

After playing keyed guitars for 15 years and switching to keyless late last year, I have to agree with Al that keyless is superior and the way to go.

I've had several over the years and the GFI I have now is one I will keep. At first I did not like the looks of it but it grew on me and now I do. I've talked with Mr. Fields about a mixup with the guitar and he was right there ready to correct it with no delay or problem. I play it just about everyday except when playing out somewhere. By the way, how many used GFI's do you see for sale as compared to the other brands.

I've had one for years. Plays and sounds fine, NEVER breaks strings.

If we're building the perfect guitar here, I'd like to see split tuning at the changer and the rods attach differently, (instead of a set screw). A couple of changes and I think you could fly it to the moon. Gene Fields is GREAT to work with and totally backs his product.

Hey, lets lock GFI, ZUM, EMMONS, MSA, etc in a room and not let them out until they build the perfect guitar and makes us all happy.

I'm keepin mine!

The GFI keyless is a fine, quality axe. I have never played one but have seen Donny Boggs play his. It sounded real sweet, and all he ws playing through was a NV 400, NO EFFECTS BOXES ! The craftmanship is top notch ! If I were in the market for a new guitar,I would strongly consider the GFI keyless. I am pretty sold on the Wilcox that I own now. But,even I realize a good guitar when I see and hear one !
