I just did a search for threads about flat wound strings and didn't find much information. Have any of you guys tried flat or semi-flat wound strings on PSG? Other than the difference in tone, are there any other problems using flats or semi-flats on a PSG? Thanks, Don

I have always used GHS PF-500(pink pack)(no comments from you Gary Preston). They are simi-flat wound. I like them because they have a fuller sound and less bar noise.
I have tried round wound and get too much bar noise.
My Williams U-12 had stainless on it when it was new but they felt too rubbery and they had lows and highs but not a lot of mids and low-mids.
A few other steel players I know have switched to them after trying them also.

I tried flat wound strings on a lead guitar for about 5 minutes. That is how long it took me to decide to never use them again. They sounded dead by comparison to round wound strings.
I would not consider putting them on my steel guitar. I do like a warm sound. I like a very hi-impedance pickup (20k). I would have to speculate from my experience that the sustain would not be there, nor would the tone.

I wouldn't use them on a 6 string guitar, they need round wounds. Simi-Flat strings are different than Flat-Wound.

GHS Rollerwound Pure Nickel!
I think this is the same as LArry is talking about. Very different than flatwound. They are semi-flat. The string zing is reduced. I have been using them on psg and 3 no pedal Fenders for about 3 years or so.

The question was: Semi-flat or Flatwound strings? I think you will like the GHS semi-flats.

I have a Gibson Byrdland guitar that sounds very nice with flatwound strings. I also had an Ibanez 335 type guitar years ago with semi
flat strings that I used with a Polytone amp. This setup had a nice vibe.

I use nickel semi- flat wound strings. they are available at Frenchy's in Belen, NM. They are manufactured to Frenchy's specs. by SIT. They are called the Silent Series. These strings give you the brillience of a round wound string and the smooth play of a flat wound string. Jody.

I've not tried them on steel, but I really love flats on 6 string. I have them on my Tele, and my Gretsch 6120 (and all my Gibsons). My guitar guy persuaded me to put rounds on my Duo Jet (a '56 with DeArmonds) and I just don't like it.

I get loads of top with flats - mind you, I play through a Bassman 4x10 which is so smooooth it's not an ear killer. I find I get the punch I want from the bottom 3 and the bright from the unwound top 2.

I have yet to find flat wounds for PSG. I use the GHS semi-flats. I have a couple of lap steels which I've strung w/ D'Addario Chromes flatwound jazz guitar strings (the 0.013 set). I love them. One of these days I'm going to see if they have enough sizes to create a proper set for my C6 pedal steel.

Thanks for the replys folks. I guess my main question is, do semi-flats return to pitch as well as round wound strings on a PSG? If they do I want to try them in my B6th. Would I get the same gauges?

Just as good. GHS makes sets for both necks.
