Hi SGF:

I happened to be looking thru the Fender support website looking for information about a used amplifier (M-80) that I tried out today at a local music store and I came across the Owner's Manual for the Fender 400 pedal steel guitar.

Here's a link to a portion of the manual that I copied on my Charter website showing the factory setting for up to 8 pedals with that guitar:

Fender 400 Factory Set Pedals.jpg

There are several things that I find interesting with these factory pedal settings for the A6th tuning:

1. The standard diminished pedals which are side by side on the standard C6th tuning are shown here as pedals 5 and 8;

2. Pedal 1 is for the Bud Issacs change from an A chord to an E chord, thereby giving the tuning a country sound; and

3. The F13th pedal setting shown at the end of the chart is really quite interesting...pedals 3, 5 and 8. Has anyone who has memories of their Fender 400 or 1000 recall ever being able to arrange their feet to get this F13th sound?

I still play my Fender 1000 but it's tuned with the standard E9th and C6th tuning, pedal and knee lever settings.

Finally, has anyone any experience using the old Fender M-80 combo amp (single 12" speaker, 100 Watts) with a pedal steel guitar. I tried the amp with a lead guitar and it sounded very clean. What appealed to me about this amp is that its weight is very light.

Al I had one, sold it to the fiddle player, had tons of high end, too much, needed more body.

Al, those old Fender suggested tuning setups were pretty obsolete when they were published, and I don't think any pro player used them. I still remember that (F13th) change from the old 1000 manual, which said to press pedals 3,5,& 8. Yeah, good luck with that one!

According to this chart
their #8 = our #5
their #5 = our #6

So, if you put pedals 5 and 6 where they usually belong these days, it would be pretty easy to change pedal 4 to try this out.

After l©©king at the chart, it appears to me that except for the 1st. string being lowered, the standard 5/6 change is gotten on pedals 4/5: [D#]_[D]_A_F#_[D#]_[C]_A_F# I may have gotten it wrong. If so, I'll be back to apologize.

After re-examining the chart (which I haven't seen in years) I like the factory set-up the way it is!

Well, whadya know?
Both 4 and 8 are lowering the 5th string.
No apologies necessary, I guess.

Hi SGF:

I neglected to put the URL to the full Fender 400 manual in a .pdf file on the Fender Support website.

The URL is: http://www.fender.com/support/manuals/pdfs/instr_owners/Fender_400_Pedal_Steel_Guitar_1967.pdf

The manual lists other pedal suggestions besides the one set up on the instrument when it was shipped out to the Fender dealer.

Enjoy!
