I am playing a S10 BMI. I re-strung it last week and in the process I took the roller-nut apart and cleaned it. I put it back on as before - there is only one way it can go, so no room for error there. For some reason the 5th string is now buzzing at the nut when I play it. When I'm past about the 3rd fret I can dampen it with my fingers behind the bar, but when I'm on fret 1 I have a problem... Any ideas on how I can stop this annoying noise? Thanks |

DAMIEN, what gauge string are you using, and you have it tuned to what note? Sometimes increasing the string diameter by as little as .001 can make a difference. Another trick is to wind the string on the tuning key in the opposite direction so that the tension behind the nut is a more "downward" pull. May sound silly but it often works. ~~W.C.~~[This message was edited by Wayne Cox on 15 May 2005 at 07:23 PM.] |

Thanks Wayne,The E is a .014 guage. I'm actually not sure what the guage of the last E I had was. I will try what you said re winding the string in the opposite direction - anything is worth a try cause it's so annoying.

If it is really your 5th string that is buzzing, and assuming your tuning is E9, that is your B string and should be a .017 or .018. Having the wrong gauge could be your only problem. |

Maybe those rollers are gauged, meaning the grooves aren't all the same depth, and maybe you put then back in the wrong order. |

Damien, try a drop of light machine oil on it and see if this takes care of the buzz...Carl |

Damien, you need to determine if the buzz is coming from the roller or the strings buzzing against the bar. If it is at the roller you might use a drop of oil as stated and also you could wind the string onto the tuner shaft so as to create a slight angle where the string leaves the roller causing a slight side pressure and maybe keep the roller from vibrating. If it is the string vibrating against the bar the 5th string could be too heavy a gauge and not allowing the bar to seat on string #4. Of course as was mentioned you should first determine if the rollers are gauged and if so make sure they are sequenced properly. Another thought, when you cleaned the rollers and axle you could have removed some grime which could have been supporting the roller if it has the axle hole worn out. If nothing else mentioned works, I would suggest you swap places with the 4th string roller and the 7th or 9th string roller. The 7th would have much less wear. Try rotating the roller under the offending string just a little. Hook------------------ www.HookMoore.com

Thanks for all the replies....after making a phone call to Don Fritche I realised that in fact the rollers are guaged, and that I had cleaned them and put them back in the wrong order. After removing the strings 3 times and trying several combos I now have it sorted. Thanks again, Damien |

I took my rollers apart to clean them and evidently did not get them back in the right order. After talking to Don and inspecting them with a magnifying glass, I placed the top four rollers with the least groove in the right order and problem solved. Don says the top four rollergrooves are 0.005 inches less than the others.------------------

I play a leGrandell and my 5th and 6th strings tend to buzz. I tried everything the great forum members suggested, most of which were mentioned above. The best remedy I have come up with is a heavy gauge rubber band stretched behind the nut across the strings attached to the 1st and 10th string tuner. Yeah it looks kind of tacky but it works for me when all else fails. It applies just enough pressure to the strings to keep them from buzzing, no tuning problems. Just my remedy. Good luck!------------------ Keep pickin', Larry |
