Which pedal steels have the widest string spacing? I'd like to find a compromise between weight and the widest spacing I can find. Thanks in advance for any advice on this subject. Joe

Of all the 10 string pedal steels I've seen, the Fenders made by Sho~Bud have the widest string spacing. I think it's the same spacing as the 8 string Stringmasters. It's a different visual experience from playing an Emmons. A lot easier to see which string is which. Sometimes those strings seem to blend all together on an Emmons, and it's hard for me to see which is which....Jerry |

Williams is pretty narrow. I had Bill widen it to match my Sierra when he built my current guitar. |

My S-10 Sierra has 9mm spacing which is perfect for me, however, my D-10 Sierra is not made the same; the strings are actually too close together, consequently I am much more relaxed and play better on the single. Tom Baker says there's nothing that can be done about the spacing. I'll probably have another axe made sometime in the future. ---j--- |

Sho-Bud Pro 1 works fine for me. I am really comfortable with the string spacing on mine. It sure helps this old guy that don't practice much anymore....al ------------------ My Website..... www.cmedic.net/~almarcus/

I have had Sho-Buds, Emmons p/p, Carter, Fessenden and Zum. I never measured, but they all seemed about the same spacing to me. I once tried an old MSA S12U, and it had very narrow spacing, but other MSAs do not. Other than Fenders, which are known for wider spacing, I think most modern pedal steels have a very similar medium spacing. To guard against the few with more narrow spacing, just be sure to ask about the spacing before buying a guitar you cannot try out first hand. |

I have a 1978 Sho-Bud LDG and a year old Williams D10 and the spacing is the same. Clyde Lane |

I'm not sure you'd call it standard or not, but; I think the most common spacing on a 10-string PSG is 11/32” at the Changer and 9/32” at the Roller~Nut! (That's 1/32” under 3/8” & 5/16” which is common for an 8-string.) Sho-Bud went 1/32” narrower when they went from 8-str. to 9-str. in about late ’59. Me knows, ’cause; me had one! ------------------ “Big John” Bechtel ’04 SD–10 Black Derby w/3 & 5 & Pad ’65 Re-Issue Fender Twin–Reverb Custom™ 15” Eminence web site |

Both my Fenders ('63 400 and '57 1000) are 3/8" on center. That's optimum spacing for me after 25 years on Dobro, which has identical spacing. Anything smaller, even by a 32nd or so, and it feels really cramped.I'm debating having a 10 string built, and I found someone who will do 3/8" spacing and with pickups to fit it properly. |

What's the spacing on a 6 string electric guitar, like a Tele or a Strat? |

I spoke with Bill at Williams guitars. He told me my Derby is 350 thousands between the strings and that the Williams is 325 thousands. Not sure what that means, other than in relative terms and how it compares to the GFI. I plan to call GFI and see if they can give me the comparable spec. I'll be calling the Desert Rose folks tommorow and Bill at Williams to see if he can make the spacing wider. Then all I have to do is learn how to play it..... Thanks Joe

The strings on my GFI are a little closer together than the strings on either of my Sho-Buds. |
