Well my friend Redd Volkaert is back into playing steel guitar; but this one is very unique in that, he wanted a single C6th pedal steel> so this is the first of that kind I've done and came out GREAT!!!!
It is a single-10 Professional from the Baldwin days of the wood neck that wraps around the changer. Has a original sho-bud pickup(thanks John Coop)that is full at 18,000 ohms and coil taps to 10,000 ohms.
Has the new "White background" John Coop replica Sho-bud fretboard that features 26 frets and is the most perfect fret spacing I've ever encountered and plays perfect. 5 pedals 1 knee standard with a couple little cool changes I know the man will just love.
Redd is coming over Sunday to take a start up lesson...(ha...yeah me teach Redd something...ha...I love it) and finally see it in person after he bought it and gave it to me to bring back to life(new life)> here it is>

Ricky what a great looking Sho-Bud Redd should be happy. That Tele he owns with the steel guitar pickup in the front has a great sound. He is my favorite Tele Whacker PICKER. Sonny

Beautiful Ricky!
I really like the changes on P-1. I have gone from an A-B change to an A-Bflat change and really like the bluesy-swingy sound that the dom. seventh imparts. As a high "G" sort of guy I am curious about all the good stuff that can be played with the P-1 and P-2 changes on that high "G"...
If Redd becomes one tenth the steel player that he is a tele player, than he will be a force to be reckoned with on the steel!

Wow! That's a beautiful looking guitar. Excellent work there, Ricky!

Looking forward to hearing Redd play some mean jazz-swing á la Jim Murphy.

Well that is just sweet.

I am not surprised Red likes C6 a lot.
So much Texas and so comparatively little Nashville in his picking.

That's sort of what I wanted when I bought my Bud,
but mine came with an E9 neck too.
So I learned that too.

Red's gonna have some fun with this baby!

NO! Thank You, Ricky & John!!

That thing looks great! I can't wait to get behind it, I'll probably have to sneak up on it for a while, once it hears me play.

If I can't be Murph on a six string, I guess I'll spend the rest of my days trying to get a couple of his licks this way.

Yippee!!

Ricky, John, and Redd,
That guitar looks great! Are you gonna put the pots back in? Did you put plugs in there? I've seen some nice matt-black hole plugs that might fill those spots. By the way, I'm havin' a blast with my ShoBud. Thanks again, and again, and again!

Thanks Ya'll; as I'm about as equally excited about this rig as anyone> I dig it man.
John B. Those are little black-mat plugs in where the volume and Tone pot were. I put the switch back in to use for the coil tap; but no we won't put the volume and Tone pot in as I never liked those in the circutry as they affect the real output of the pickup and Redd has a nice old Volume/Tone pedal he'll use anyway. Plus; the extremely well-sought after hard-to-find Allen Bradley 500K typeJ pots that came out of this steel; can certainly be put to better use in a volume pedal...ha...
Drew; everything Redd touches Turns to Gold Man.
Grant; yes I always used those changes somewhere on my steel(back when I had a steel with C6th on it..ha..)as Big Jim Murphy always had those changes and to immulate what Murph did; it's a neccessity. If you want to come over for a lesson; I'll show you what you can do with those...
Redd is such a huge Fan and supporter of the Steel guitar and those who play and I'm just glad to put one in front of him to play> He LOVES the sound and making the sound of the steel guitar.

What makes me love Redd's music is the way he seems to yank his hat down and say with his facial expression, "Stand back boys, Got another lick coming, and it's gonna be a whopper!" I 'spect when he gets his paws on that showbud, it'll be the same. " Stand back, boys------------------------------!" We need more grab-a-holt pickers like Redd! Guys like Ricky Davis just sharpen the weapon and lube the wheels!! John Coop makes the axels and Redd makes it go!

Redd, Murph and I used to talk about you playing steel; he said "if Redd played his guitar chops on there,it'd be all over for the rest of us" Im expecting big things..

Beautiful Bud, great job Ricky! Zig-zag neck inlay and rope apron inlays looks kinda unusual, have you seen others with that combination? I imagine it will suit Redd just fine.
BTW, I especially like the setup where pedal 2 (or 5 on a D-10) lowers the first string instead of raising it, got that on mine too, it just seems to make more sense musically.

Regards, JH

It's beautiful - I always thought a ShoBud S10 would be sweet for C6.

Pedal 1 is a lot of fun. I'd probably move that to another knee since I'm addicted to raising As to B on that pedal.

Have fun with the lessons and be sure to tell him about all the sweet paid gigs he's missing until he learns E9

Joe; yes many of those single-10's from the Balwin era; had the zig-zag on the neck and regular rope wood inlay on the body.
Yeah; that lowering the top string; always made sense to me too...ha...>and certainly would of put that first pedal changes on another knee lever if there was one...ha.
I think Redd is enjoying the new Toy; as he hasn't told me to sell it yet...ha.

Ricky-Nice job on that Sho-Bud. My pro-1 has 6 pedals and 5 knee levers and it too is set up with a 6th tuning(E6). But the first 2 pedals are your E9 A and B pedals and I have F# on the first string. I don't think I will ever part with this one. Thanks for your helping all of us Sho-Bud players, with all the terrific posts of yours. I am also glad that John Coop is making those beautiful parts. He made my extra knee levers and lots of new bellcranks, etc. just great!....al
