I bought a Rains SD-10 in November, 2004. I decided I couldn't do without the C6 neck, so I got a D-10 in August, 2005. They are, by far, the best sounding, best built steels I've ever played in my 56 years of playing. If someone can post them for me, I can e-mail pictures of both guitars.

Ray,
Thanks sooooo much for posting the picture. This guitar is really loaded down. It has 9 foot pedals and 10, (yes, 10) knee levers. I had Bob split the right knee levers for each neck. There is a separate set of knees for the E9th neck and another set for the C6th neck. Makes them a lot easier to push.

I own a black D-10 -- bought if off of James Parker. I can't confirm it, but this is supposedly the guitar Hal Rugg was playing in the pictures from the 2005 Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree on the Rains web site. Great guitar!! A wonderful experience every time I sit down with it.

Other than there great beautiful finishs, what do you think is different about the Rains Steel that the other mfg don't have?
Or, what makes the rains a 'special' guitar. I am certainly impressed with the pictures.

Ditto Ernie,,,,there are are a lot of "pretty" guitars out there,,,what makes this one "special"????,,,,I've not seen any pics from underneath????,,,,NO OFFENSE intended (by any means!!),,,just wondering what my reasons would be (other than asthetics) for choosing this guitar over a Zum,,or a Mullen,,,or a ????,,,

I have a Rains SD-10 that I've been playing since January and love it. So, this is my 2nd Rains. Corky told me of a new pickup from George L that he thought I would like and should try. I think they are called the "SS". The pickup has a blade like the old Lawrence 705's instead of pole pieces. After playing this thing through my Fender Steel King for a few hours these last few days, I'm sold on this new pickup. The only thing I wish George L's had done differently is designed the pickup to where the blade is visible like the 710's were. I think they were neat looking. The SS has the cover over it which makes it look like any other George L pickup. Also, this guitar plays like a dream. It has the smoothest pedal and knee action of any guitar I've ever owned or played.

I've had my D10 for 30+ gigs. I took the guitar straight from Gary's shop to a gig and never looked back. At first, I had to tweek some of the same levers and pedals, but that's normal. I finally broke a string (17)at the 25 gig mark. Havn't broke another since. This week, I'm doing a casino gig for 3 nights, so my guitar stays set up. Last night, we did a show with Leon Russell, and they struck our stage for him, then re-set our gear. I didn't touch anything. When I sat down to tune, I didn't have to touch a keyhead after being manhandled by stage hands.
I think she's settled in officially now.
Oh, did I mention tone?

Could some of you Rains owners, help us non Rains owners understand a little about the tone? Is there another guitar that the Rains sounds similar to? They are purty guitars for sure.

The Only one that comes Close in my opinion Too the sound of my rains Was a 1994 Mullen D 10 That i Really Liked. I Think the Rains Has a Brighter Sound And sustains a lot better. Randy Gilliam.

Terry, I've been playing my Rains now for about two years and the closest thing I hear and have been told a lot is a Emmons push pull. I use a George L. E-66 on mine and to my ear there's nothing sweeter. I'll tell you they sure are a lot of them out there now and more and more each day, and that says a lot right there. It took me 36 years to find this tone and its there every time I sat down behind it.
For those of you on this thread that have not tried a Rains yet, you owe it to yourself to just sit down at one with a good amp. and play for a while, then I think you'll know what everyone is talking about, the tone, sustain and action and all.

I could'nt have said it better Fred, and i agree, mine sounds the same every time i play it. We just did a live performance recording through our PA board and listing to it i think mine sounds alot like a Franklin. If i could figure out to make an audio clip on here i would post the lead on "USA Today"-Allen Jackson" that we do and get other opinions.

I just received my SD-10 a week a go and have not taken any pictures yet. There are quite a few nice looking guitars cosmetically, but the real beauty of the Rains is in the tone and sustain. I just sold a Carter and have had an Emmons and Zum...this one is the best! Might also mention that Gary Carpenter did the final assembly on mine and did an outstanding job.

Having owned almost all the major brands of steels (which I think they are all super steels), I love the Rains for its sustain, tone qualities and playability. In my opinion, the Rains already has established its own distinct clear sweet sustaining tone, but for comparison, it is closest to a great sounding Emmons p/p (I've played p/p's for over 35 years.
