For the purposes of experimentation:

tuners have a pattern they use for the temperament octave, and it accommodates 3rds & 4ths which are wide from pure and 5ths that are narrow (which doesn't necessarily apply here, where JI intervals are a possibility).
So from what I've read here, I might start out:
Pedal down, A's=440

Tune the E's to that, perhaps using Paul's suggestion (E ref. 442), making sure that the 4th is not narrow from pure

From the E's, make the G#'s pure (JI) or a little wider; tune the D#'s to G#, making the beat rate something like E->A

Tune the B's pure or slightly narrow from E

Tune the F#'s to the B, slightly wide from pure, maybe the same beat rate as E->A

Tune the C#'s to F#, checking the A->C# so it's not too wide (and checking the E->C# M6th so it's not too wild, similarly checking the B->D# third)

A tuner would then reverse that path, going back to check the intervals, making slight corrections until he has the temperament he likes.

(This is kind of theoretical, since the first and last time I tried something like it was on a Red Baron, and you just can't get there from here without an E lower, and with that kind of cabinet drop, which of course doesn't exist. )
But some experimentation along these lines might help to determine how you like your intervals to sound, and provides a system for 'course corrections'.

Two cents, please.

Hi Paul....I realize you tune by ear, but at some point have you jotted down your tuning temperament? If so, could you possibly share your tuning chart?

Thanks,

Joe

WOW!! After years of tuning straight up 440 with a tuner and touching up the harmonics by ear, I started to play around with this meantone tuning that Paul described. At first I could hear just a slight difference when I used my amp. But when I started just using my headphones.. what a difference in the sweetness of chord triads and 2 note harmonies. Everything sounds more in tune.
The only drawback is the time it takes, maybe with more practice tuning it will become faster.
Paul, do you use this tuning in live club situations too or just in the studio setting?
BTW, using headphones will definitely make you spend more time cleaning up technique on both hands, amps and effects cover up a lot of noise.
