I'm looking for the tab to the first E9th steel lick in Alan Jackson's "I don't Even Know Your Name". I just hope my fingers can pick fast enough . Thanks for any and all replys.

I think Paul Franklin has this on cassette. He kinda talks you through it, you might try his website.

Do you mean the song "Married To A Waitress", and the lick after the words "sexual games". If so, this is it, more or less.

I don't know if this is the one. It sure goes fast. That tempo is definetly not in my fingers. But I believe I tabbed it right.

I tried to do the 2nd solo. I think this is the start but the 2nd half is giving me trouble. I have it as a 300K wav.file if anyone else wants to give it a try.

OOPS. No wonder the second part is causing trouble on E9. I have a slight idea of how to play it on E9, but I am not sure if it can be played fast enough.
BTW, what other CDs feature that particular style of playing. IMO it sounds so much better than bursting out 16th single note runs or faster.

Any Curly Chalker album/CD. He does lots of C6 chord lines and might well be considered the best there is in playing that kind of style.

Sweet! This is one of my favourite Paul Franklin rides (right up there with Walk of Life). I can't wait to learn this.
I remember seeing the video for this song about 10 years ago too, and when Paul goes into the solo on the C6 neck, the camera flips upside down. Does anyone have a link to this video? Jeff Foxworthy hijinks galore.

The 2nd solo was definitely C6, A buddy use to have the PF talk through tape. I tried it years ago when I first started on steel but couldn't hang. I might have to borrow it and try it again now that my playing has progressed.

Read that post again, Tim

Both solos on the Alan Jackson tune were played by Paul Franklin. The first was E9 and the second C6.

The reference to John Hughey on the thread you quoted was an error that was corrected later in the thread.

It's much more Paul's style than John's.

Hi Larry. Here's a full recap of that thread: First we had Bill Cunningham saying it's John Hughey, then Joey Ace said it's Paul Franklin, then Gary Walker jumped in saying it was John Hughey. That was the most recent post. Now we're back to Larry Bell saying it's Paul Franklin. You can imagine I might be a little confused.

To whomever played the C6 solo, "I'm in love with you, baby, but I don't even know your name."

Lets remove the confusion
IT WAS PAUL FRANKLIN

Paul would not release an instructional tape teaching you how to play a John Hughey solo.

Case closed in my book -- plus I'm almost certain Paul has mentioned this himself on the Forum. I'm not inclined to do the search but encourage you to if you wish.

Tim,

I played both solo's. The first was on E9th and the second on C6th. All of this inquiries has brought back this session memory.

I remember Keith asking me to play the second solo like an old fashioned swing player would. When you listen to the second solo, I was actually borrowing voicings found in Noel Boggs style (whom I feel defined the western swing chordal thing) and fused them together with a syncopated rhythmic concept of melodic phrasing, very much like a big band horn section.

I'm flattered you all remember this record.
The C6th is my favorite tuning.

Just in case anyone is still interested...I have the entire tune tabbed out which includes the first E9 solo and the second C6 solo tabbed for E9. Check out steppingstonemusic.com and go to "Session picks" page. Includes tab and talk-thru on CD.

I've been working on the sweet picking part of the E9 solo (thankyou, Bengt!), where the technique involves sweeping the thumb backwards while pulling the bar back to mute the strings.
I think that the second sweep goes like this:

1-------------------------------
2-------------------------------
3-------------------------------
4--12---------------------------
5-----13A-----------------------
6---------14B\12B---------------
7-------------------------------
8-------------------------------
9-------------------------------
10------------------------------

Any thoughts?

Paul Franklin's quote: "I'm flattered you all remember this record. The C6th is my favorite tuning." To thatI'd say: "WHO COULD FORGET IT?" Our band is playing this one in Beijing, so thanks for coming up with it, Paul. Thanks also to the tab guys: Jeff, Tim, Bengt,& Rick Kornacker.
