Anyone know the chord progression and author of this beautiful tune? It sounds like the melody is from the pentatonic scale.

It was written by Buddy Emmons according to the following post from Frank Estes about a year ago:

quote:
Buddy was blue about not going to Japan and he wrote this tune and named it "Blue Jade."

If you listen to the "Black Album" version of "Blue Jade," it has a very oriental flavor to it.

The 1978 ISGC version does not have that same flavor. I like them both, but I end up "trying" to play the ISGC version in attempt to capture that monster tone Buddy had. In fact, I will often use the beginning of that tune to determine if a guitar has "that sound." If the guitar "growls" with nearly infinite sustain at the first fret, then you have an "acceptable" guitar under your hands!

I think it would be hard to capture that same "Feel" of the "Black Album" version if one did not have a piano player doing all those chords and fills as the piano player did on the "Black Album."

Anyone like me who heard the ISGC version before the "Black Album" version, would find it a little surprising how different the "flavor" is. By knowing why Buddy wrote the tune, it makes it clearer.

I don't have the chord changes handy, but I know it's in the key of F, and most of the song is based around F, Bb, and Dm. You're right, the "A part" is built on the major pentatonic scale. Are you going to play this one on lap steel Andy?

Thanks, Doug, that's a good start. I was thinking it would lay out pretty well in diatonic tuning or perhaps E9th on non-pedal.

This is tabbed out in one of of Scotties books. Either the Anthology of Pedal Steel, or Steel Guitar Method. Ithink it is the Anthology. Oops, didn't notice you weren't after the tab for it.

MEL BAY's Anthology of Pedal Steel Guitar by Dewitt Scott has the E9 PSG tab for Blue Jade, Danny Boy (Emmons version), and several other songs. The arrangements also include standard music notation, so if a player can read music he can play the arrangement on any tuning, lap steel, or any other instrument.

Here's the link: MEL BAY's Anthology of Pedal Steel Guitar
When you get to the page, click on "Contents" to see exactly what's in the book.
