Which version? (Miles, Jaco, Bird . . .) Whose solo? Bird's solo? ( ) The head's pretty tough, but the solo would be challenging for a veteran jazz sax player, much less a steel player.I know the Jaco Pastorius bass solo from his first solo album is available for free on the web. There may also be a transcription of a version Pat Martino available. You may want to contact Reed Kotler, who publishes transcriber software and is a very hip jazz musician (his website is http://www.reedkotler.com ) I don't believe there's an official transcription of the most famous versions (e.g., the Savoy sessions -- multiple takes are available as I understand it). And, other than Jim Loessberg's tab which I'm pretty sure is just the head and bridge, you'll be working from standard notation. This is an ambitious project.I'd start with the head and finish it before even beginning the solo. -- but that's just me. ------------------ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page 2000 Fessenden S-12 8x8, 1969 Emmons S-12 6x6, 1971 Dobro[This message was edited by Larry Bell on 10 December 2002 at 12:44 PM.] |

It's been a while since I've cracked it open, but I think the Charlie Parker Omnibook has one of CP's solos for Donna Lee transcribed. Of course, that's a far cry from tabbed for steel, but it's probably better than nothing. The Jaco version of Donna Lee...man oh man, is that ever sweet. He was my "hero" when I was a kid learning bass. |
